A lot of public universities still aren't that expensive. It isn't something that someone can easily pay their way through anymore, but it's a far cry from what some private universities cost. I seriously don't get why people get saddled with insane debt for some of these mediocre private schools.
Engineering school for me was mostly about learning how to learn, getting some baseline knowledge to know what questions to ask or where to start looking for answers, and broadening my horizons. Those have a ton of value for me.
One of the use cases on Reddit is to tag titles that are misleading/wrong/changed, which doesn't matter as much here where titles can be edited.
I definitely agree about community specific tags. Filtering by, for example, community announcements, news, or discussion posts can be pretty helpful on bigger communities. We could self-enforce that for searchability with [terms in brackets], but a drop-down to select tags would be a lot smoother.
I completely agree with you that big industrial polluters are the main problem. I also think that having the mindset every day to live more sustainably and reduce personal waste is valuable, even if it's really just a drop in the bucket overall. It can be eye-opening and a step toward bigger steps like voting, advocacy, boycotts, and conversations with others.
I would rather do something infinitesimally small than nothing.
Speed limit changes should be accompanied by speed humps / raised crosswalks, narrower lanes, narrower vertical space using trees, planters, bollards, etc, more frequent stops or mini roundabouts, curb bumpouts, etc etc.
Just changing the speed limit without changing the physical space will only do so much.
If China can help push the next space race, I'm all for it. I know that papers like this have come and gone in the past, but it's starting to feel more attainable.
Elon was also moving engineers over to Twitter when he bought it, which could have caused lawsuits from Tesla shareholders. Amazon and Tesla being public opens them up to more scrutiny about the billionaire BS.
I love the capture bag. I can't wait to see these get rid of some big dangerous targets.
The orbital recycling plant seems a lot further out, but it's great to see concepts like that. We'll need some serious on-orbit manufacturing before that's worthwhile, but it's fun to watch ThinkOrbital think.
There isn't a direct competitor to Starlink. OneWeb is the next biggest LEO constellation, but it doesn't cater directly to individual users like Starlink. It's also 18% owned by the UK government, so that might have made it a no-go.
Amazon's Kuiper constellation should be a Starlink competitor, but they haven't even launched their demo sats yet. Others, like Iridium and Globalstar, are too slow.
Starlink will be incredibly difficult to replicate, which is why really only Amazon and the Chinese government are trying (what an insane sentence). SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets are the cheapest commercially and Starlink gets internal pricing. Even if someone else had identical sats, they couldn't get that launch discount.
I think those other things exacerbate the fear in "AI". Like, on top of all of that other stuff, some fancy new software is starting to take jobs in writing, journalism, art, voiceovers, etc.
I'd love to read some specifics. NASA has a lot of unique facilities that plenty of their programs and private companies rely on, but I wonder if there are some buildings, test stands, or even entire facilities that should be mothballed. For example, if SLS ever winds down, I'm guessing a lot of money could be saved at Michoud, which seems to take a hurricane hit all too often, and Stennis, which has some incredible old Apollo test stands that look like they want the sweet release of the scrap heap.
Are you saying NASA should work on a rocket? To me, that seems like the exact opposite of what they should do. It seems like a total waste of resources for NASA to try to recreate what already exists.
I'm tempted to get one to use as a "little brother controller". And just for the absurdity. I'll wait for some more actual reviews to trickle in first.
