  • So is Firefox mobile or Fennec actually better in this regard?

  • But weren't they acquired by some big evil company?

  • I didn't have an issue with fireballs either, thankfully, because I made my saving throws before they got to me.🔥😉

  • Am I right tho about having to scan QR codes to go back and forth between desktop and mobile on SimpleX, or am I just 😵‍💫?

  • Selfhosting is kind of hard and labor intensive for some of us; had a lot of trouble trying to set up NextCloud on my QNAP (if that counts as selfhosting), and finally gave up.

  • Grr! Ok, but damned if I could get that to work! It seems like you can't use the desktop and mobile client at the same time! You have to scan a QR code to switch between them! And it has issues with firewalls and VPNs! Old and clueless here, maybe part of the problem. 🙁

  • This link has a helpful graphic, thank you! 🙂👍

  • Erg, after all this fuss, Element is kind of hard to use and not very intuitive 🙁

  • Yeesh, doesn't sound too good on their part. An interesting story, thanks for taking the time to write all that. I will now go ahead and cross Beeper off my list.

  • I'll take a look at those, thank you. Using one of these is preferable to going the Matrix/Element bridge route, you think? I really like the idea of Matrix, but it was a real pain to get everyone on Signal, and bridging that to Matrix/Element seems kind of complicated and quite possibly less secure (although Signal has its own issues of course) than just using Signal by itself.

  • Sorry, on Linux Mint 22.1. I'm not a big fan of KDE stuff in general, since it seems like you have to download tons of other stuff just to use one of their apps, but I suppose I could give it a look . . .

  • Signal isn't on F-Droid out of the box, I don't think, but it is in the Guardian repo and probably in a few others as well. I downloaded the Signal apk directly from their website, and that version does auto update and has for quite some time.

EDIT: if you're worried about it, I suppose you could uninstall it and then download it from them directly (be sure to verify the certificate), after which it will prompt you to update it periodically from the app itself.

Even better, you could think about switching to Matrix.

EDIT EDIT: Although basically I'm just passing on dessalines's recommendation to you, I don't really understand Matrix too well, especially the bridges.

However, I would suggest that if you do decide to use this that you pick one or two of your favorite periodicals and either donate or subscribe to them. The Guardian and your local paper might be two good choices.

Also, if you have uBlock, turning off javascript can sometimes defeat a paywall.

  • Lemmy ML got slow and gummy right after I posted this, should I delete, or am I just being paranoid? And at least three downvotes; should I not have asked?

  • Hi Nate (@alphapuggle@programming.dev), I finally got myself switched over to Graphene, and unfortunately I wasn't able to install the extracted apk file, and was wondering how you managed to get it working.

(Note that this is for Typewise Offline, which is a paid version of the regular free Typewise that has more features.)

If I can't get it to work, I'll have no scruples pirating it since I already paid for it.

  • I think this might be because they're worried that if Rubio doesn't get it that Trump will nominate someone even worse.
