  • You know, for a long time I thought the argument that choosing a distro was s big blocker for people was dumb, and people should just try things like I did. As I got older, though, I recognized that if I wanted someone to actually make the change, it's better to have a recommendation for them. The problem often with that though is they have to trust me exclusively, they don't have the relationship with Debian or Fedora or whatever, that doesn't mean anything to them. It's a "devil you know is better than the one you don't" situation. Sure, Windows sucks, but they don't know if the alternative is better. They have to take my word on it and take the plunge.

Valve, though. They know and trust Valve. Everybody's got Steam and generally Valve has treated us well. I probably won't use SteamOS myself outside of my Deck, but I am INCREDIBLY excited to have a distro to recommend that gets over that trust hurdle. And even if SteamOS isn't a perfect fit for them, it gets your foot in the door and the next distro hop is that much less scary.

I have been very happy with the work Valve's put into Linux. It benefits us all. Gaming was always one of the biggest hurdles and it's effectively a non-issue now thanks to Proton. Legitimately one of the few bright spots in a sea of shit lately. Yes Gaben has 6 yachts and they're still a profit driven corp and whatnot, but in this space they are doing a great job.

  • I've also found that cannabis can be helpful, but as with any medication, it's important to use it in correct doses at the right times.

I find that it can be incredibly helpful to get through tasks I would otherwise find too tedious like cleaning or putting away my clothes. It can also help to get me to a flow state on solo creative tasks. That said, it can also make it difficult to focus in more "high-information" situations, such as studying and especially listening to and understanding other people.

While cannabis isn't physically addictive per se, tolerance is a real thing and you may find yourself spending more money and, importantly, more time on cannabis than you'd like. You can lose a lot of productivity you'd gain with the time taken packing and smoking a bowl or two (or three or four as time goes on). This can be managed with careful dosing and tolerance breaks but you have to put in the effort.

Ultimately, if you can afford it and it makes you feel better, there's very little harm outside of smoking anything, which vapes and edibles can get around. But if you want it to help and not just be a hobby (or worse, a crutch), you need to treat it like medicine.

  • My little town in the mountains is a Dark Sky community, which most people take pretty seriously. The Commerce people put up bright white streetlights on the less-than-a-mile-long main street last year and everyone's pissed about it.

  • In my experience pretty much everything works this easily. Steam games are a click away, Linux support or not. For things outside of steam you can either copy the install folder from a Windows install or just run the installer through Proton.

  • Things can get rough but I play mostly to have thriving communities with social drama. Deaths happen but that's part of the challenge. Turn down the difficulty and play it like The Sims, it's surprisingly chill.

  • The American Declaration of Independence makes the bold claim that it is a self-evident truth that all men are created equal.

The guy who wrote those words was also raping his slaves. It's always been this way.

  • I rationally understand that spiders are mostly beneficial but they're just so alien. Too many legs, too many eyes, move too fast. Also there are a few that will kill you. Here in SoCal black widows are in every dark spot in my garage.
