  • What I don't get is the inaction from the democratic party on changing the voting system between elections.

    1. The Democrats didn't secure a large enough majority in previous elections to overcome Republican resistance to changing things like FPTP voting or the electoral college.
    2. There is a lot of contention within the Democratic party (at the federal level at least) as it shifts further towards the right in an effort to remain in power. Getting rid of FPTP voting would make it harder for centrist/right leaning Democrats to remain in power.

Several states have switched to RCV for some of their elections, and progress has been slow, but it's being made. If you want to see more, elect people that prioritize implementing better voting systems.

  • Putting words in my mouth, making wild accusations, on top of being incredibly disrespectful elsewhere in this thread, nice.

You can't deny that both Newt Gingrich and Bill Clinton are adulterers. Newt Gingrich accusing Bill Clinton of adultery is hypocrisy on Newt Gingrich's part, because Newt Gingrich is an adulterer. That was the original point of the original comment. Saying a person does a bad thing is not the same as absolving them of all of their other transgressions, like you're trying to so pedantically suggest. If you'd like to continue this discussion I'd be happy to, but if you want to continue to accuse and divert, I will not be replying.

  • Carrots often have dirt caked on the outside that's hard to get off with just water, so peeling is a good way to help with that.

The peel has the healthy bits

Sort of, but not really. The nutrients of a carrot may be slightly more concentrated in the skin, but all layers of a carrot contain those nutrients. You're not depriving yourself of an appreciable amount of nutrients by peeling a carrot.

  • I'm reading through The Wheel of Time for the second time right now and my experience has been different. It's crazy how the tone changes from the first book to the last, and the amount of character development that occurs. I think each book is been better than the last, and each for different reasons.

  • What is it with people trying to turn the entirety of October, November, and December into Christmas?

It's one single night, it's not a season. Is this the Americans trying to push it on us to increase our capitalist consumption or something? I see it a LOT these past few years.

What's next, celebrating other holidays in the actual month that they fall in?

  • The way I see it, there's two options:

    1. Pay people more. 300k, 400k, 500k, whatever it takes. Surely there's a number that people would feel is worth the risk. The obvious downside is that increases the cost of construction.
    2. Make the process of roofing safer - invent new safety gear or safety practices, automation equipment that can be operated from the ground, introduce legislation that encourages those practices or subsidizes the new equipment. The obvious downside is this requires upfront investment and cooperation between government and industry.

Either way, the current practice of "throw cheap immigrant labor at it until it goes away" is not tenable.
