  • It's got a weird mix of features that don't match.

The mammy figure and side art appear to be bolted on a spring lever espresso machine, even the plates around the drip tray appear to be added on.

The Mammy's arms as the lever would be a feat of engineering to be functional because the force is in the wrong place if this was adapted from a center lever machine.

The only side lever machine that I can find that might serve as the basis for this is a vintage Gaggia that was made up until the 70s. https://greatinfusions.com/vintage-gaggia-compact-82-espresso-machine/

The front has some anachronistically modern features, like the lighted rocker switch to the bottom left that is typical of 1980s appliances, and that small rectangular plastic looking water level window to the left which again points to something more recent.

The copper tubing as the steam wands doesn't make sense as everything that looks like this has the flexible wands.

  • ...this is a virus that already circulates among populations in China, the U.S. and elsewhere, so there is more herd immunity against it than there would be against a novel virus, such as COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic.

Everyone's probably already caught it, and it doesn't seem to be as deadly as COVID-19 was.

  • Sure, I'll bite:

In 2024 up to week 50, there have been 45,447 deaths involving COVID-19. This is compared to 159,940 deaths involving flu or pneumonia and 2,892,661 deaths from all causes in the same time frame.

    https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/index.htm

For comparisons sake, traffic accident deaths in the first three quarters of 2024 were 29,135.

  • I think the government has a good handle on COVID-19 now with more-or-less mass vaccination, so it's not going to cause mass deaths and disabilities.

I'm more worried about H5N1 bird flu, more currently the affect it's having on milk and egg prices (over USD$12/doz. yikes!) and the potential to mutate to direct human-to-human transmission.

    From https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22401-bird-flu dated 12/5/2024

What’s the mortality rate of bird flu?

Overall, the mortality (death) rate for bird flu in humans is high — historically, about half of all people with known infections have died. But most recent cases in the U.S. have been mild.

  • The sad part is, that allowing Elon to export "Full Self Driving" or whatever other technology to China won't even help Tesla that much, and will even harm the company in the long term:

The Chinese will just copy/steal the technology, because all foreign investment is through joint ventures with local corporations, and give it to their domestic manufacturers, like they did and continue to do with all other offshored production that winds up in their hands.

As a recent spate of articles about GM, Honda and Nissan, tells us, the Chinese domestic manufacturers now own 60% market share.

Tesla's market share in China has dropped in nearly half over the last 3 months from 9/24 - 12/24, from 6.43% to 3.39%, and that was already down from 9% in 2023.
