  • Thunder for Lemmy on Android.

    Tusky for Mastodon on Android.

I rarely use either Lemmy or Mastodon on desktop. If I do, it's just through the web client.

  • I was in art school around then and a good portion of us were pirating windows 98 or windows NT. And we were running pirated Photoshop and pirated Illustrator on it....a lot of us pirated everything.

  • Yeah I feel this OP. I am always forgetting birthdays, even my own sometimes tbh. I do randomly get gifts for friends and family, but its never for the usual holidays.

I...don't have many friends, lol. But the ones I do have all understand my stance on holidays and celebrations. It's just not for me.

  • The continued disempowerment of American unions and American worker solidarity over many decades ultimately culminates with this overt power grab by American Capitalists. Others here have rightly pointed out that these foreign workers are fleeing their own capitalistic nightmares (oftentimes imposed on them long ago by an imperialistic western hegemony), and thusly are not truly to blame for wanting to come to America with the prospect of making a better life for themselves and their loved ones.

Even if some of them might be aware that their coming here and taking jobs for lower wages has a negative impact on domestic labor, their impetus remains the same: escape poverty, keep your head down, fulfill your employer mandated duties, and survive.

Let's not miss the forest for the trees here. As George Carlin put it, American coorporate business owners want only one thing from their workers: obedience.

"Well we know what they want. They want OBEDIENT WORKERS! OBEDIENT WORKERS! Just smart enough to run all the machines, and do all the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs..."

The long term model for Capitalists across the globe has been to cripple the rights of workers over multiple generations if necessary.

This is because they think we deserve nothing. The fact that they provide us the means to survive is something they feel we should be grateful for. But for us to ask, nay demand, to survive with dignity? That is blasphemy to them.

In regards to dignity, they see that as little more than a business transaction. How much profit did you make them last quarter is directly equivalent to the amount of dignity they will afford you, as long as you also bend the knee and kiss the ring every day.

They look to places like China or India with their terrible working conditions and worker compliance and salivate at a future where American labor is no different. They look to those same places and lust after the crushing of political dissent and resistance movements that exist there.

This is the model they are now bringing to the people of America. And they know many of us won't stand for it, but ultimately resistance movements are not preventative, but rather palliative, giving them the advantage of the aggressor. I've always said and truly believed, "Americans will never bend the knee for a King. Never."

But obviously I was wrong, and naive. Trump is forming his monarchy. America was born out of hatred for monarchs. Yet through our own vile prejudices, hatreds, and other weaknesses, we have plagued the world over with our ideologies through war, imperialism, colonialism. I know a true nightmare is manifesting here now. All that is left for us now is to go to our respective hills, and die on them.

    EDIT: wording.

  • Lemmy has become my main social media outlet. For better or worse, Lemmy's just my kind of place. I'm off of all mainstream social media except LinkedIn, which I barely use, but keep around for work related reasons.

I do still peruse Reddit, mainly for TV shows and niche subjects I can't find here. But I haven't logged in or posted since the first major exodus over the API pricing, and have no plans of returning.

I do post on Mastodon from time to time, but the format is just too geared towards short form content, and ultimately just isn't my cup of tea.

So yeah. I'm generally happy to be here with you all shooting the shit about politics, Linux, etc. Long live Lemmy!

  • I have a script that makes a list of every package and binary into an output file of packages as a list. I can just cat the output of the file in a subshell and pass that off to pacman -S. Pacman might complain here and there, but I can just edit the list. Then its just cp -r my config files that I've backed up and run my backups for movies, music, pics, games, etc.

And yeah, it's not perfect, but it's good enough for me. I still have to do other stuff like switch out bash for zsh, etc. Gotta love bash scripts and backup configs though. That plus actual backups makes restoration from catastrophic failure at least bearable, albeit still time consuming.

  • Fuck these fascists. This is not just about Musk's greed. All these sycophants around Trump obviously want so much more than money. They want unlimited unregulated power, immortality, a white patriarchal supremacist ethnostate. They're setting up an Authoritarian Kyriarchical Totalitarian regime. An overt American Empire.

The terrifying part about all of this is that this infighting, while perhaps entertaining to witness, is ultimately a display of monarchy forming in America, a monarchy that a significant portion of Americans apparently are willing to usher in for the sake of relieving economic hardship.

In my view, this is because the power structures left in place by unfettered, unregulated capitalism have so neutered the power of the populace and stripped them of access to knowledge (and nearly everything else) that they are left with only a facade of choice every four years. They are left voting with their wallets or with their hate, because they are generally aware their vote means little more than delaying or accelerating the decline into fascism.

We all know this is only the beginning. As the pawns and knights and rooks jockey for position around Trump, eventually a concentrated mass of the most sycophantic and power hungry will be the ones left surrounding him. And Trump gives less than two shits about competency and all the shits about subservience.

After this jockeying for power has settled, it is likely the explicit and overt Empire building can begin, and the end of the world might very well transpire thereafter.

    EDIT: wording/grammer

  • You can still use yt-dlp with most of the invidious instances that are still up, but not displaying the video for some reason. Just copy the URL and use it with yt-dlp from the command line. All still works, sponsor block and all.

On my android phone I use either invidious with seal(yt-dlp wrapper app) or tubular (fork of newpipe with sponsor block).

  • I prefer to see changes in RAM and CPU registers in hexadecimal or binary output. 🤓

  • Oh dang! Good to see you on here! 🤩

    Keep up the great work.

  • Fuck...

  • You could tell some plot points in the final episode were very rushed, like Rutherford's arc. I don't think this was the ending the writers planned or wanted, and the show is so good, it deserves to have the ending the writers can be satisfied with.

That said, it was as good an ending one could expect given the circumstances, and I really hope we get at least two more seasons and a movie!

  • Interesting. I know little, but a segfault is indicative of a memory leak. Did you install these using an AUR helper like paru or yay?

  • I've been depressed...hell I still am, though I cope better than I used to.

I'm guessing its not just the holidays that gets you down. There's two ways out, and I suggest doing both.

    1. Conform to some of the social norms that basically means take some of the classic advice you've already seen on here. Get out of the house and participate in activities that you might not initially enjoy, but hold some promise of you at least getting a bit of enjoyment out of, or at least stick around for the socializing. Think of it like taking your vitamins, you don't have to like it, but its probably good for you and therefore you should consider doing it.
    2. Find things you enjoy doing in your solitude that are nondestructive/neutral or even healthy (depends on the context if its avoidance/addiction or not). Listen to podcasts, read books, learn a new skill, listen to music, meditate, exercise, etc. Just something. We can give you ideas all day, but just choose something and stick with it for at least a couple weeks before trying something else.

The harsh truth is that without some kind of existential raison d'etre, life is just a series of activities we use to distract ourselves from our own loneliness or avoiding ruminating on other topics like death.

The world right now has made it hard for people of all walks of life to connect authentically, and so don't blame yourself entirely for the situation you're in. That said, when you're down in the shit, there's only two choices, you either wallow in it or you clean yourself up and do what you can to make your way up and out of it.

And I hold no judgments on what you or anyone decides to do here, life is hard and yeah, it can suck. But I personally look at it that I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't. But I already know what it's like being damned if I don't... might as well find out what it's like being damned if I do.

Take it or leave it, that's all I've got for you or anybody. Good luck out there.

  • I briefly worked with Solid at a nonprofit, passing around turtle files and whatnot. It's a cool bit of tech that kind of harkens back to the days before JSON took over. Much more secure in theory too, it just would need the entire infrastructure of the web to change around the paradigm for it to really take off...but yeah its a cool idea akin in some ways to the fediverse.

  • I use Artix Linux with runit as my daily driver. I'll admit, its very nice, but I haven't run systemd except on my VPSs for years now, so I really don't know if it's slow or not as my point of reference is long gone.

  • I just wish the media would start calling it what it is. Far-Right isn't the right term. Fascism is. And that has what has come to roost in the seats of power across the globe.

  • First thing to troubleshoot is to try to run the program from the terminal. Usually if it fails, the output can point you in the right direction. At the very least you can post the error on the arch Linux forums or elsewhere and hopefully get a helpful response.
