  • ds9 is best trek imo. the double fake identity twist is just silly enough that it somehow feels conceivable, even with the cosmetic surgery angle. i don’t know that i’d take a plot like that seriously in anything other than a star trek story lmao

  • depends HEAVILY on the eye. some folks are really good at eyeballing shit. usually this goes hand in hand with other “visual calculus” skills like telling whether two things are the same size or determining angles at a glance.

reckon it’s just spatial reasoning + visualization + practice. i had an uncle who could look at a mechanical system and tell you exactly where all the wear would occur. i always thought it was some kind of savant trick until i started working on similar stuff.

the brain is just another muscle, you can train it to so all sorts of really amazing things!

  • i learned about crosscode recently, and i could tell from just a few gameplay snippets that it’s a game i’ll spend a lot of time with. at full price it was only $20, and i’m more than happy to support the devs.

their next game, alabaster dawn, looks really nice so far too.

  • i love when lists like this include “metal” bc you can get a vague idea of when they were conceived.

it’s a little like how everytime a standout hit movie or game comes out, without fail it’ll be topping “best x of all time” lists for a year or so. at least until the next big exciting thing releases lmao

  • i’m not well versed on the causes, i imagine there’s a lot of factors at play. but do i have a friend who lived in DC for a few years, and talking to him about it was whacky.

i have a specific memory wherein he was just walking around outside while on the phone with me and there was gunfire in the background. i said something like “hey should you be outside right now?” and he, VERY CASUALLY replied “nah that’s a few blocks away, i’ll be fine.”

  • maybe a difference in the actual composition of the grease? i was writing on polished stainless pots at below freezing temps, but i was ALSO using new-old-stock refills bc the current standard size is it’s own proprietary can of worms lol

  • side note, mechanical grease pencils are literally some of the best goddamn marking tools ever invented by humans, and the fact that we’ve moved away from them as a standard in favor of sharpie-style disposible markers is APPALLING.

there’s myriad “industrial” markers you can buy, which are generally especially well suited to one specific inclement situation. low temp markers won’t freeze, but will often bleed and feather. oil-proof markers will write on a slippery surface, but will smear and take ages to dry proper (RIP lefties). paint markers can write on anything, but only as long as the surface doesn’t immediately destroy your nib and prevent future wicking.

grease pencils (quality ones at least) go down like a crayon, stick to ANYTHING, and generally won’t smear at all. obviously no one should be writing their thesis with one, but they can do pretty much everything we use permanent markers for. they’re also cheaper and produce far less waste.

as far as i can tell the biggest downside is there’s a smaller profit margin for the manufacturers.
