  • Right, and this is why dedollarization is taking off like wildfire. Nobody wants to use US financial system, but until recently it's been the only game in town. Now that people see it's possible to bypass it, there's a lot of momentum to create an alternative trading system. I imagine the fact that members can't sanction one another is what makes BRICS in particular so appealing.

  • I would even go as far as to say this was the only major remaining tech advantage the west had. China's been outpacing the west in most areas of science and technology for a few years now. Chips were the one big piece of the puzzle and now China can make their own.

  • I think so as well, the problem was that US saw USSR as an ideological threat from the very start so there was no possibility of this sort of cooperation. The main reason US decided to normalize relations with China was to try and prevent China from having good relations with the Soviets. So, perhaps this is the only way things could've worked out.

In the end, US made a huge miscalculation in underestimating China, and completely missed China outpacing them in every regard while being drunk on having defeated USSR which they saw as the only serious threat to their global hegemony.

  • In classic liberal fashion, they're trying to vote us off the internet. 😂

  • These people are seeing their whole world unravel in front of their eyes and it's driving them increasingly bonkers.

  • I have 5~6 libs follow me around and downvote my every post on lemmy.ml, I find it absolutely hilarious. Can you imagine anything sadder than people spending their whole day following my account just to rage.

  • Thing is that this only works when you sanction a few isolated countries. Once you reach a critical mass, then it's just an alternate global economy. And that's precisely what we're seeing now happening with BRICS.

  • I think we may be at a point where there are more countries under US sanctions than not. 😂

  • Remember this when libs keep repeating that Ukraine is defending western values. These are the values they're talking about.

  • American exceptionalism is a hell of a drug.

  • The fact that the system is very obviously broken is definitely a big factor. I think most people realize that US isn't a genuine democracy, and this is one of the reasons there's prevalent voter apathy. Deep down, people understand that this is all just a circus to make them feel that they have a voice.

  • One of the core problems with capitalism is that it's fundamentally based on growth and consumerism. Companies need to constantly sell products in order to continue to operate and this leads to things like planned obsolescence where goods are intentionally manufactured to break so that new ones could be sold. This is just one of countless examples of perverse incentives that capitalism creates.

On the other hand, socialism creates a completely different incentive structure. Things are produced based on societal needs, and producing things is seen as a cost. This creates incentive to make things that last, and that can be repaired. Here's a great article explaining how this worked in practice in USSR.

So, while socialism alone doesn't ensure sustainability, it doesn't create perverse incentives that capitalism creates, and it makes it possible to have a sustainable economy.

  • I agree that direct impact of the ban on Apple sales will likely be negligible, but I do think that there could be ripple effects both in China and other countries. And of course, 18% of a market the size of China is still pretty huge in absolute terms. So, it's not apocalyptic news for Apple by any stretch, but it likely will have visible negative impact going forward.

  • The funniest part here is that these kinds of articles sowing mistrust in the electoral process are doing far more damage than China could ever hope to achieve. Both liberal and conservative media continue to fuel the idea that elections are rigged and that the other side is cheating to win. US is now at a point where large portions of the public think that elections are unfair and if their party doesn't win that must be because the other side cheated or some foreign actor interfered in the elections.

Democracy is fundamentally a social contract that people choose to abide by. People have to believe that the system is fundamentally fair, and when their side loses then they have to accept that as a democratic choice. However, once the trust in the system is broken then there is no reason to respect election results. At that point people see the winner as an illegitimate tyrant that rules over them. The country ends up in a very volatile territory once the idea that the system is rigged starts to take hold.

  • lol no idea, it is pretty garish though :)

  • We're definitely seeing the propaganda ramping up now. Despite that, it does look like a lot of younger people see socialism as the future. I think part of it is that once people start losing faith in the system, then the propaganda starts losing its effectiveness as well. I do think that the right is currently more effective at organizing than the left unfortunately. The main job for communists today is to figure out effective messaging that helps people transition left from the mainstream.
