  • Yeah, 132 avenue is really critical to the provincial road network. /s

The scale of stupidity on display here is honestly humbling. He's talking about a 2-lane residential collector road. It's literally 5 blocks away from a freeway the city just spent a billion dollars expanding. Don't know how to merge? No problem! There's an 8-lane monstrosity with traffic lights 5 blocks in the other direction. As you can see, the road network in that area is already massively overbuilt. The concern over losing driving lanes/parking spots is ridiculous in general, but to try to apply it to this road is so preposterously disingenuous, it verges on parody.

I would also like to add that the province of Alberta withheld over $100M in disaster relief from Jasper because the town wouldn't commit to building single-family detached housing. Just to give you an idea of how far they're willing to go to own the urban libs.

  • What a hugely important message. At a time when our sovereignty is being challenged by American imperialism, we are not going to survive by slashing one of our most important public institutions for short-term gain. I'm not even sure what there would be to gain, anyway.

  • Yeah, if Canadians had the character to withhold their vacation dollars over the unacceptable behaviour of the US government, they would have stopped going there 20 years ago. The only difference is that now you risk being summarily thrown in a gulag even if you don't look stereotypically middle-eastern.

  • It's not that people are incapable of picking up on nuance, it's got more to do with it being reeaaally hard to convey tone through text. Like it would be hard to fully grasp all the finer points of a psychological movie if instead of watching the movie, all you had was a text version of the dialogue.

Personally I'm a fan of using an '/s' marker, but inside of a spoiler tag.

  • In a functioning society, we wouldn't have to rely on the "philanthropy" of rich people to fund good causes. It should not be possible for one person to hoard so much wealth that they get to personally decide which issues get ignored.

  • Except the marketing in this case is actually more accurate. Using 'kilo-' to refer to 1024 of something is a straight up misnomer. The Ancient hackers really cursed us with an ambiguous convention for counting bytes.

  • They've really had to go into overdrive recently to keep coming up with fresh ones, since Carney is just doing everything they've been talking about.

At this point I'm suspicious of the fact that "Pierre Poilievre" is an alliteration. It's as if he's somehow made of catch phrases, like some kinda comic book villain.

  • Buddy. Catch phrases are 100% of this guy's vocabulary. He sometimes puts 3-4 of them in a single sentence. Say I'm watching hockey on tv, I'll just be pouring liquor into my mouth for 30 seconds every time a PP ad comes on. By the end of the game I'll have serious brain damage (only partially from the drinking).

  • That's a good question. This group - Democracy Watch - is a non-profit, which as far as I can tell, seems to be operating in good faith. Their stated goals to hold governments and corporations accountable in the interest of safeguarding and improving democracy are definitely admirable. But I also couldn't find any disclosure of funding sources, so make of that what you will.
