  • Purely punitive. They haven't raised the federal gas tax since 1993 or adjusted it for inflation, and the federal highway fund is set to dry up in just a few years. So in response they levy an outrageous and disproportionate tax on 2% of drivers rather than across the board.

Removing the $7,500 tax rebate, stopping the EV charging station expansion, removing emission rules, levying this tax, and then having the nerve to say it's about "fairness."

I own an EV, and with how little I drive, if I paid a gas tax it would be literally $25 annually for me.

  • As much as I'd like to move to Europe or elsewhere, and I seriously considered it in 2016, I found that I'd take a severe pay cut for my industry (regardless of taxes). To stay around my current compensation, I'd most likely have to stay in the western hemisphere for remote work in the US, but I also don't think Canada is far enough away.

I also really like my house and have invested a lot into it, so selling it right now for what it's worth will be difficult. I don't think I'd be able to sell it before the recession hits anyway. If it's a depression, I'll be screwed wherever I am.

I could go someplace in East Asia, but their companies have an awful work / life balance.

But I'm widely traveled and speak a second language at a functional level, so I feel I could live anywhere if I didn't care about my assets or maintaining my current cost of living.

It's a tough decision. I wish my blue region could just peacefully exit the union by vote, but I know it would only bring war.

As a kid, I used to wonder while reading history books why anyone who wasn't a Nazi would stay in 1930s Germany. I feel like I'm answering that question in real time.

  • Swap the election order and it may not have been quite so clear cut. Though this order is probably for the best, as most Americans wouldn't have paid attention to the MAGA hangers-on winning in other countries and would have elected the cruel buffoon regardless.

  • WELKER: Some people on Wall Street have expressed concerns that the possibility of a recession is increasing. And I wanna know what you think about that. Are you comfortable with the country potentially dipping into a recession for a period of time if you are able to achieve your long-term goals?

TRUMP: Well, you know, you say some people on Wall Street say. Well, I tell you something else. Some people on Wall Street say that we’re gonna have the greatest economy in history. Why don’t you talk about them? Because some people on Wall Street say this–

WELKER: Well, that’s what I’m getting at. That’s what I’m getting at, though. It’s the same question.

TRUMP: There are many people on Wall Street say this is gonna be the greatest windfall ever happened.

WELKER: And that’s my question. The long term. Is it ok in the short term to have a recession?

TRUMP: Remember this. Look, uh, yeah. It’s– everything’s ok. What we are, I said this is a transition period. I think we’re gonna do fantastically.

  • It's because he made a deal with Ukraine instead of mining national parks and "on the verge of war" with Iran. Also she thinks Covid vaccines should be pulled. In other words, he's not awful enough for her.

  • This almost needs its own post. Ultimately it's what you read into it, but there is some interesting overlap. I did a quick scan of the places this person is mentioned in the Bible.

Daniel: Arises from a "fourth kingdom," which will rule over the Earth. He will be a king who will succeed 10 kings from this kingdom (these are presented as 10 horns on an enormous, terrifying beast, and later clarified to be kings). This king will be different from the kings who came before, and he will subdue 3 kings.

2 Thessalonians: He is called the lawless one.

Revelation: A dragon will emerge from the sea and will have 10 horns and 7 heads wearing 10 crowns, each head containing a blasphemous name. The beast will emerge from the sea, and will derive his throne and authority from the dragon. (The dragon seems to be implied to be a revived Roman Empire, with the 7 heads representing the 7 hills of Rome.)

He receives what appears (to John) to be a mortal head wound, but survives.

He will rule for 42 months.

He will be a master of deceit, cause astounding devastation, be successful in whatever he does, cause deceit to prosper, and consider himself superior.

A second beast will arise with the authority of the first beast, and makes people follow the first beast, and kills those who do not. He will brand all with the number 666 (John cautions not to read this literally), and none may buy or sell without this mark.

Ultimately, the beast will be defeated, captured, and cast alive into a lake of fire. Carrion birds will feast on his allies.

  • I'm also tired of hearing about disc rot. The vast majority of people just repeat it like a meme and have never experienced it first hand. It affected a fraction of CDs and a much smaller fraction of DVDs. Blu-rays will outlive you. Most "rot" is the result of manufacturing defects where the glue layer separates, and they recognized this after CDs and made significant improvements with each subsequent disc generation.

Also, nearly 90% of physical games do not require a download to play and complete.

None of this is to say you shouldn't enjoy digital games or rip your media. I just want people to stop unintentionally spreading misinformation.

  • You combined a good link with a false rumor.

The good link talks about voter suppression techniques: voter roll purges, questionable disqualifications, etc. All states do this, and some amount of purging is necessary (far lower than occurs), but this has been in place for decades. This is awful, but it's a systemic hurdle for Democrats just as the Electoral College is a systemic hurdle. It's not unique to 2024, though it would've been nice if Democrats tried harder to make most of it illegal leading up to the election.

As for the false rumor: no, bullet ballots were not "twenty times more" in swing states.

Most of the rumors alluded to by the original comment I was replying to are just wild, unfounded speculation. People claim "bullet ballots are proof that Elon Musk tampered with voting machines." No, bullet ballots are proof that there are a lot of low-information voters morons out there who don't normally vote, couldn't tell you who any of their representatives are, are apolitical, but who just came out of the woodwork to vote for Trump because they really like Trump (and only Trump). That's, like, Trump's whole brand, and these people absolutely exist.
