  • Tracking != taking all of your data and selling it for profit. That’s what Google does with YouTube, even if you pay for premium. So I see no reason to pay for it.

Not to mention a premium sub costs more than most streaming services out there, including double the price of lots of Plex shares that have thousands of movies and shows to watch.

  • Too bad you constantly have to be worried about dumb policy changes that can affect your older videos which can mean cutting off those revenue sources

Also I’ve never seen another platform that demonetizes content as much as YouTube does.

  • Their yearly revenue has increased by $20B over the last 5 years alone, let’s not pretend YouTube is hurting for money here.

And other video platforms do exist and are successful. I think more people would consider premium, myself included if three things were different.

    1. The price. Over $10 a month for no ads is insane. If it were $4.99 a month I probably would have it and not care. I hardly even remember that I pay for Plex pass each month. I don’t want or need YT Music, make a separate plan.
    2. Paywalling old features like being able to watch videos with your screen off on mobile. Most videos where it’s just a person taking and there’s no on screen content worth watching is perfect for that. But they removed it as a free feature locking it behind premium. That and being able to throw the app into the background and have the playback continue. I mean come on…
    3. Screwing over the creators. YouTube, much like Reddit, has taken the thing that made the platform what it is today, that being the content and those who generate it, for granted. The whole adpocalypse and constant demonetization of videos for stupid reasons is getting old. Things might be a bit better now? But I support most of my favorite creators off platform through Patreon or whatever so they get what they deserve and aren’t shafted by Google being full of greedy fucks.

So yeah, really it’s YouTube shooting themselves in the foot. It’d be very easy to get tons of people to sign up for premium but they’re choosing profits over people. We all know how that works out.

Google can go fuck itself. Ever since they removed the “don’t be evil” slogan they’ve been doing a great job of being shit.

  • Personally I become a member of the channels I’d like to support or join their Patreon if they have them and then use AdBlock+SponsorBlock and uYou+ on mobile.

If you pay for premium Google is still collecting all of your data and using it for their own gain. Why support them at all?

  • Why would you? Google still tracks the shit out of you even with premium, so you’re still the product, you’re just paying for the privilege of them collecting your data instead of blocking it with Adblock.

I’d consider premium if it wasn’t so absurdly expensive for what it is. So instead I use uYou+ on mobile and uBlock origin+SponsorBlock in browser. I’m a member of my favorite channels to support them, fuck YouTube/Google.

  • The biggest problem is that even if far left politicians get elected locally, it’ll be years before they get into positions where can enact the changes we actually need to stave off the worst effects of the climate catastrophe.

By that point it’ll have been too late for a long, long time. We need people who will act now and they don’t exist.

  • lol for real? Just look at the 2016 and 2020 elections. our two party system will never allow for far left politicians to be elected. The DNC will ensure that only those who are beholden to their corporate overlords get on the ballot.

  • Corporate democrats aren’t going to make the sacrifices needed to stave off the worst of climate change, they have reelections to worry about.

We’d need to roll back so many modern comforts in order to actually make progress in making sure we don’t destroy the planet and no one is lining up to be the boogie man who takes AC away from millions.

I hate to say it, but most people will only care when climate change personally affects them, just like COVID. Until then it’s heads in the sand all around.

  • I don’t believe that those scenarios are that plausible.

lol i think they said the same thing about the Titanic sinking. also the submarine guy said the same thing about it imploding.

    Hmm 🤔

also all evidence that’s not conservative propaganda points to us hitting the worst possible outcomes when it comes to climate change. Read the IPCC reports and the worst case scenarios listed within. That’s what’s going to happen over the next ~40 years

  • Sure. Essentially what happens is the ocean absorbs much of the CO2 that’s released by us. If you’ve ever heard the term “ocean acidification” that’s what causes it.

Water and the oceans change on a much more gradual scale than the atmosphere, so it takes decades for the CO2 to be released back into the air. For example, if you bring a pot of water to an open flame it still takes time for the water to reach the temperature to boil, it’s not instantaneous.

The ocean is far more massive than our atmosphere. It’ll take time for the changes to take effect, especially a noticeable one on our end. But if you take a look at the ph levels of the oceans over the last century it becomes abundantly clear we’re messing things up big time.

  • The Model Y (2022). Its a great car. Tesla has made a great leap in quality from 2020 to 2022. We have Model 3s from different years, and the difference is huge.

And let me say as someone who has been driven in a plethora of Teslas as Uber/Lyft vehicles… they have not lol. Squeaks and rattles on brand new 2022-2023 cars is just embarrassing. Trim pieces falling off is just pathetic.

Maybe they should use some of their “industry leading margins” to invest in a QA team because as it stands there is no QA at that company.

  • Oh man that’s great! Congrats!! Always amazing to overcome health challenges like that.

Yeah I agree lol, I mean who knows what half of this processed stuff is doing to us. Might be causing the rapidly falling fertility across the world given that microplastics have been found in wombs :(

  • Eating high saturated fats like those found in heavy cream isn’t a great idea on the daily. It can raise your cholesterol decently which can lead to build up in your arteries.

Low carb diets like that are probably fine short term but it’s not something you want to be on continuously due to the fat.
