  • I host a few handfuls of websites, some discord bots.

I hoard Linux isos. I use it for general purpose learning and experimentation.

There is also kubernetes running, source control, and a bit of everything else.

  • I will say, it's nice not having to nickel and dime my storage.

But, the way I have things configured, redundancy takes up a huge chunk of the overall storage.

I have around 10x 1T NVMe and SATA SSDs in a ceph cluster. 60% storage overhead there.

Four of those 8T disks are in a ZFS Striped Mirror / Raid 10. 50% storage overhead.

The 4x 970 evo / evo plus drives are also in a striped mirror ZFS pool. 50% overhead.

But, still PLENTY of usable storage, and- highly available at that!

  • Eh, it's not about people trying to get rich...

There just literally, is a huge shortage of housing right now. Pre-covid, I could easily find 100-200 houses for sale, near my small town.

Now? There are hardly 20 houses for sale at a given time.

Everyone is looking to rent/buy, but, there is hardly anything for sale/rent.

When COVID hit, builders basically stopped building houses. But- people didn't stop reproducing.

  • Ya know....

Around a decade ago, I picked up my house for around 110k USD. Nothing fancy, a nice little house, with a decent amount of room inside and outside.

These days, the exact same house is worth over double that. Supposedly, its worth 200k.

Now, that sounds absolutely fantastic, except for- the process to build my dream house, went from costing 200k, to nearly 500k now.

Guess, i'll be stuck in my now tiny house (kids. lots of kids).... until the damn housing market returns to somewhat normal.

  • replace their watches,

Never really got the craze around smart watches.

    their TV streaming device

if your streaming device requires you to have a certain type of phone to use, you should replace it regardless. Roku/AndroidTV/etc... They don't care WHAT type of device you try to stream media from. Have an IPhone? Sure. Android? No problem. Blackberry? That might not work.

    their car chargers

Wait until you realize any 5$ charging cord from the corner store can charge your phone, and connect it to your car!

    all their apps

Most of those work just fine on android. Just swapped my Dad's phone from apple to android a few months ago, and was able to find all of his apps without any issues.

  • Consumer-based regulation works better.

ie- when people stop spending billions on iphones that don't use standardized hardware.... Then, perhaps Apple will stop being anti-competitive assholes.

Right now, they can get away with being anti-competitive assholes, because everyone keeps buying their products.

    Money speaks.

Just watch- apple will indeed release a phone that has a USB-Type C port. Then, disable data transfer to any non-apple certified USB cord, due to "security concerns" or "fire hazards"

  • Everything on lemmy is synced (federated) to all other subscribing instances.

That is how i am currently reading/commenting on this post. I am interacting with the synced copy of the post and comments which was sent to my instance. As well- you are interacting with the copy which was sent to your instance.

I could technically flip a few values in the database and tell my instance that this is a local community, and I would then be able to manage it as such.

  • Yes.

So. my recommendation, take the amount of panels you think you need, and double it.

With the exception my capacity being a bit less then what I actually need. Happy with my solution. Power outages are a thing of the past now. Had a disaster knock out power for the entire area for around a week earlier this year. I was able to run completely off-grid during the entire ordeal, and that includes running the central HVAC.

    But- a few notes....

    1. Ohio doesn't get the best solar radiance. Install more panels.
    2. For DIY, look here: https://signaturesolar.com/ Those guys have the best pricing you are going to find. I use their EG4 batteries. I hear good things about the inverters too.
  • You technically aren't wrong.

But, in my case, I already had all of the capacity paid for regardless. I'd say, lemmy runs me around 20-30w of load total.

    30w * 24 hours * 30 days = 21,600Wh / 1,000 = 21Kwh * 0.08c = 1.68$ per month.

In reality, the power load is quite a bit less, and my calculations don't account for the solar panels on my roof.

Given, I have around 140-160T of total storage capacity, its not really worth putting a price on the small amount used by lemmy. My internet is paid regardless, and lemmy usage is typically pretty low (typically measured in Kb/s). So, not really worth putting a price here, as it averages less then 1% of my total connection.

If, I wanted to put a price tag on it, my labor to actually support and maintain it, would be where all of the money went to.

  • There are third party solutions which helps a bit.

For example, Lemmy-helper from RocketDerp. https://github.com/RocketDerp/lemmy_helper

But, I'd imagine with this recent growth, its only a matter of time before better administration and moderation tools start appearing in the native GUI.
