  • I can't read what you mean if you just insult me instead of attempting to communicate better. Clearly we have different views on this. I'm pretty sure I'm not misunderstanding you, I just think your argument is unproductive and pretty much in-line with the saying "perfect is the enemy of good"

  • Let me explain how it works when you self host like me:

    • "All" starts out completely empty, there are no federated instances to find this way.
    • You then have to browse communities on other instances and subscribe to them on your own instance. Only then will posts start showing up in "All".
    • Since there's only 1 user, the list of communities in "All" is the exact same list of communities in "Subscribed"

For most people yes, you can just browse "All" unless you're on a smaller instance, since someone on your Instance has probably already subscribed to the community you're looking for.

  • I think it would show up in All still, but only posts that were synced while it was subscribed I think?. I haven't really checked if posts would disappear again. On the "Top Day" view I use, the "All" posts are identical to "Subscribed"

  • If you're on an instance with only 1 user, they're the same thing. But yes, Lemmy's a lot better if you just subscribe to what you want.

  • I guess since the petition we have doesn't point out every single problem that exists, we better not sign it, because we need perfection, a minor improvement is unacceptable. /s

  • Setting up my own instance ended up being pretty good for me since it meant I had to manually subscribe to every community I want. The quality of "All" posts depends heavily on the instance you're on.

  • all American social media companies are guilty

I don't disagree with you, but you're arguing about switching to another US company when nobody is suggesting that.

    The petition says:

transition official government communications away from Twitter/X to more secure, community-regulated platforms that prioritise public safety, accurate information, and accessibility. We encourage the government to explore publicly accountable alternatives, including decentralised networks, to ensure reliable and responsible communication with Canadians.

This seems like the opposite of American social media companies. What part do you disagree with? Facebook and Google are quite clearly not "publicly accountable alternatives"

  • Did you even read the petition? It even gives the suggestion of using decentralized networks and community regulated platforms. What part of that makes you think they're going to jump to posting on Facebook?

  • Unfortunately I think a tariff on starlink could hurt Canadians more with the number of rural areas with poor Internet. I could totally get behind a tesla tariff though, there's plenty of other options there

  • They're synonyms in this case, so either works here

  • People need to work to live, which requires looking at job postings. Shocking, I know

  • Well the study we're commenting under calls out that press releases and job postings are also becoming increasingly LLM-written. You can't avoid those simply by touching grass.

  • I'm wasn't really talking about reassessments, which is up to the property owner to request. The property value is updated every 4 years automatically, and the change in taxes are spread out gradually over those 4 years. If there was a massive drop in value 3.5 years ago, then sure, that sucks a little, but the next 4 years will compensate. Ontario has a lot of steps to go through before your unpaid tax debt turns into asset forfeiture, I can only assume tenants have more protections in Canada. Evicting someone from their primary residence has its own huge list of rules.

  • Detroit isn't a good example for Canadian property tax. Ontario reasseses property taxes every 4 years, and as far as I can tell, it's 100% possible for them to go down as they are tied to the specific property and municipality, not national inflation.

  • Not a single screen to be found! Just analog gauges and buttons as it should be.

  • They mean time to write the code, not compile time. Let's be honest, the AI will write it in Python or Javascript anyway

  • Costco/Kirkland is a US brand, but they do sell slightly different inventory in Canada than the US, so I guess it's possible their shampoo is from a local supplier.

  • You might be surprised... basically every small business that doesn't ship through Amazon uses Shopify, so it's not like there's a lot of options unless you just stop buying online entirely.

  • I always thought T&& made sense as a movable reference. In order to move something, you need to change where the reference points, so conceptually you need a reference to the original reference to update it. (Effectively a double reference)
