Damn, that's super annoying. My Ford truck has a similar feature, but at least it's possible to turn it off permanently. I usually leave it on the "vibrate steering" / warning only mode, so if you're distracted it'll warn you but not actually take over.

When I first got it and was towing a trailer through some narrow curvy roads it was downright dangerous because I needed to cross the center line to stay on the road, and the truck was trying to steer me off the edge.

It's also one of the few places that have lossless audio files available for download. I'm a big fan of Bandcamp. I like having all my music local.

Public domain wouldn't be the right term for banks being publicly owned. At least for the normal usage of Public Domain in copyright. You can copy text and data, you can't copy a company with unique customers and physical property.

Most versions of their logo are a splat. I've never seen this version before.

Well, they're talking about "tin, tantalum and tungsten", not diamonds, so that part makes sense. They did water down the title compared to the article where they describe them as "blood minerals" though, you're right about that.

Honestly I don't know if I'd be able to spell random words on the spot either. I feel like I'm decent at spelling when writing or typing, but as soon as I start saying letters out loud I lose my spot and mess it up. My brain just doesn't work that way

AI has absolutely wasted more of my time than it's saved while programming. Occasionally it's helpful for doing some repetitive refactor, but for actually solving any novel problems it's hopeless. It doesn't help that English is a terrible language for describing programming logic and constraints. That's why we have programming languages...

The only things AI is competent with are common example problems that are everywhere on the Internet. You may as well just copy paste from StackOverflow. It might even be more reliable.

I don't understand why they don't just put up an RSS feed on elonjet.net Why even use social media posts? They've got their own website.

I agree that it's possible to arrive at the conclusion "pain is bad" as an individual, but I guess what I'm arguing is that there's no absolute hard line on what is and isn't ethical. Each individual person might have their own personal line, but there is no guarantee that line will be the same as another person's. Case-in-point, a psychopath is someone with reduced or no empathy for others. They may very well not consider pain in others bad at all.

How does that study account for the fact a high income individual is significantly more likely to have access to a doctor to diagnose them with a personality disorder?

Statement #3 is hearsay. I would argue the only thing you can know is that you personally do not like pain. There is no absolute good or bad, only what aligns or doesn't with your passions (using the term loosely here).

The Golden Rule of "treating others as one would want to be treated", is a logical conclusion that comes from experiencing the world and seeing that there's a high probability that others will return actions in kind. It's not perfect since everyone has different preferences (just look at the variety of sexualities and kinks out there).

Something I've come to realize recently is that everyone has selfish motivations, some people are just a lot more careful about how those motivations effect others. Personally I worry quite a bit about how I might be inconveniencing others with my actions, and tend to stay rather isolated as a result.

I feel like I'm learning a decent amount from this thread. I definitely consider myself a (overly) rational person. I haven't really thought about it before, but obviously I've still got some passions driving things.

If I was to put it into words, I'd probably say I'm passionate about learning how things work and finding elegant simple solutions to problems. Which is generally tied to my selfish goal of having more free time to just experience the world without responsibilities.

Thanks for inspiring me to think about this, maybe I should go read some more philosophy...

Technically all it takes to be a CEO is to spend a couple hundred dollars to register a corporation. You don't need employees or anything. Generally the focus has been on CEOs of publicly traded companies, since the "CEO" of some local business probably isn't making millions of dollars.

Yeah, for movies and TV shows in original quality, physical media makes a lot of sense due to the size. I know I've been able to buy lossless music as raw FLAC file downloads, which has been really nice.

Does this have anything to do with transistors and computation? Or are they only talking about harddrives? A huge increase in density would be cool, but I'm not really convinced they would get much faster because most of the slowness comes from physically moving a reader arm and lining it up with insane accuracy. It may be able to complete with an SSD for density, but speed is debatable.
