  • There is a lot of variation in how good or bad mods are. On Reddit you get anything from /r/askhistorians mods that are generally qualified in a particular branch of history and do a good job yeeting trash comments and on the other you have the conservative safe space mods that yeet people for not being conservative enough while screeching how pro free speech they are. All in all, I havent dealt much with most mods there.

Here though... theres a lot of automatic moderation going on. At least on the server I am on that yeets comments that say certain bad words which I think is a bit overzealous.

  • I would say that a lot of this has to do with survivor bias. Most of the shitty soundtracks were forgotten and buried. Only the really good ones had staying power. So it is easy to convince yourself that the past was so much better because you remember the good and a lot less of the absolute trash that existed back then and compare that cherry picked past to today's mix of good and bad.

  • Lets get one thing straight: it was always about profit. The only thing that changed is that they figured out that they dont need to put in as much effort to get the same financial result. They are the corporate equivalent of someone realizing they get paid the same wage whether they just barely meet expectations or spend 60 hours a week working their ass off. If gamers want them to put in the work, they have to give them a reason to and right now they're not.

  • Not just hedgehog, there's one called Sonic Hedgehog...

And there's an enzyme called Fuculokinase sometimes abbreviated "Fuck" in the literature because some of us are still 12 years old.

    Here and Here are examples

  • Antibiotics kill (some) bacteria and are ineffective against viruses, fungi, protists and depending on the class, certain types of bacteria.

    Fungicides kill fungi.

Penicillin for example, kills gram positive bacteria by disrupting their ability to make sturdy cell walls. Weak cell walls aren't strong enough to maintain the integrity of the cell against the osmotic pressure that is trying to pop them like a balloon so they... pop like a balloon (lyse)

  • Chemist (and biochemist) here. Organometallic compounds of Mercury are primarily dangerous because Mercury ions bond fairly strongly to soft ligands like sulfhydryl groups found near the active sites of enzymes. This can result in the displacement of the metal ions or otherwise disrupt the structure needed for enzyme functionality. Mercury metal OTOH is considerably less reactive. It is not safe to breathe in for prolonged periods of time but it is no where near as toxic as its organometallic derivatives are. Dimethyl Mercury for example, is extremely dangerous. A single drop has 100+ times the organomercury content needed to kill someone.

    • Dump the ex I was dating around that time instead of letting her take up two years of my life that I wont get back.
    • Pay more attention to the people that actually put effort into their friendship/relationship with me and drop the ones that didn't.
    • Work out more and eat better.
    • Socialize as much as I could while living in the dorms.
    • Either join or create study groups.
  • Mendel was very very lucky that he chose the traits that he did. They happened to be single gene traits. If he had picked any number of multigene traits, it would be very difficult if not impossible to work out how simple gene inheritance works.

  • Itll slowly bleed out users to a number of alternative forms of social media and become functionally irrelevant like Slashdot. Still alive but in the same way someone with most of their brain turned to fluid and kept alive on life support.
