  • OK, now I understand a little bit better what you were trying to say, and I agree that all the complaining about any particular major instance is pure bandwagon/circlejerking/stereotyping/etc.

In my personal view, lemmy.world is the worst Lemmy instance for a variety of reasons, but I don't think it's all .world users or even a majority, so I don't go around complaining about .world in every thread here like people do about hexbear and lemmygrad.

It's gotten so bad that, like you said, people are witch-hunting even other instances because they still federate with hexbear and lemmygrad and people think they're secretly harboring underground users of those instances. It's McCarthyism all over again.

  • Ok, I somewhat agree - I think under-reporting happened under both sides, even if Republicans may have done more of it, because both sides had some of the same incentives to do it.

But that's beside the point. I'm just trying to get people to admit that Biden also did a bad job in handling the pandemic, in the interest of truth and acuracy, but I see that that's never going to happen with some people here (not directing this last sentence at you futatorius, but just in general with the people who have replied so far and those who downvoted me).

  • What effects do you think Biden telling the CDC to stop pushing for masking, ventilation, vaccination, and reporting on COVID, and then telling the country that the pandemic was over had on COVID deaths?

Like I said, yes, Trump did a uniquely terrible job handling COVID (except for project warp speed to push for ultra-fast development of vaccines), but it's flabbergasting to see people speak as if Biden did nothing wrong in his own handling of the pandemic.

  • Sorry, but this sounds like a completely unhinged attempt to blame hexbear for everything that goes wrong anywhere.

The post from Dagwood222 that UnderpantsWeevil was complaining about couldn't have been more completely opposite to the usual hexbear take. When is the last time that any hexbear user defended democrats like Dagwood222 did?

  • I can’t think of a single thing. The most important project they’ve undertaken was the ACA, and I don’t know if entrenching health insurance companies permanently and legally into the fabric of our nation is all that much to celebrate.

Yes, and don't forget that the ACA was modeled after "Romneycare" that Mitt Romney had implemented in MA, which in turn was modeled after a plan from the Heritage foundation. In other words, the ACA was essentially a Republican/conservative plan. The main reason Republicans hate is that it was Obama who implemented it nationwide.

  • You got a little bit of a point. Even if "equally" may be an exaggeration, you can certainly blame Biden for essentially dropping the push for masking, ventilation, vaccinations, and reporting of COVID. I do and always will. Like I said, both of them sucked regarding COVID.

    Our rating: False

The post overstates the number of COVID-19 deaths reported in the U.S. during Trump's presidency. At the time Trump left office in January 2021, the death toll had surpassed 400,000, according to multiple health organizations. The U.S. marked 1 million COVID-19 deaths in May 2022.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic_in_the_United_States

    Deaths 1,212,505[3] (reported) 1,197,470 (CDC estimate)[6]

That means that about twice as many people in the US died from COVID under Biden's administration than under Trump's (1.2 million minus 400,000 = 800,000.

Granted, Biden had a lot longer time dealing with the pandemic than Trump did, but this was all just to point out that Biden ALSO sucked in his handling of COVID.

  • As much as Trump is absolutely terrible, Biden was equally responsible for the large number of COVID deaths. His administration made the CDC completely abandon masking, ventilation, and other preventative guidance, almost completely abandon or hide COVID statistics, and he also said that the pandemic was "over". Credit both of them, a pair of terrible presidents.

  • This is a good point. I'm pretty sure that if you're active on Lemmy, PixelFed, Mastodon, or even have multiple active accounts on multiple instances of each of those (like a lot of people do), each single one of those would count as a separate active user. I really can't think of any way that this wouldn't be the case, because how would the statistics servers know that your the same person?

  • I'm sure he's just planning to scam them instead of paying. He's famous for doing that repeatedly to his debtors. Even during the 2024 campaign, some cities were not accepting his rallies because he still owed for previous ones.

  • I am also afraid that many republican voters are too deep in the groupthink to see out of this. Trump can just make up some reason, no matter how flimsy or absurd that their problems are caused by the left and most will believe him.

This really worries me. At this point, he could completely mess up the country and the world (as he's trying hard to do), do it completely in the open, blame the democrats for the consequences, and his supporters would believe him. I don't think this will end well.

  • FYI, if anyone is interested in VPN for torrenting, apparently Mullvad's VPN is no longer good for that. Something to do with port forwarding. Out of the three that are recommended on https://www.privacyguides.org/en/vpn/ (IVPN, Mullvad, Proton), only Proton apparently still supports that.

  • To show an example of of what vegans face, !carnivore@lemmy.world got locked as it was a community which was willing to dunk on vegans, which is against LW terms of service.

Honest, but tangential question: is dunking against vegans specifically against the LW terms of service, or is it a more general violation against dunking on any group? I'm asking you because you seem to be familiar with the history of the carnivore@lemmy.world lock and also their terms of service.

  • I would have recommended you mine or venera.social.

What is your server? Which Friendica instance would you recommend that is currently accepting sign-ups? I'm very interested in trying out Friendica to move away from Facebook completely.
