Came here to bring up the DNC burning Bernie. Hard to trust after that fiasco.

If you have any interest in holding out another year or two a battery replacement would be much cheaper. If you’re looking forward to the upgrade then enjoy the new phone!

Sorry my question was poorly formed. You were talking about digital files being stored perfectly fine on a local medium. I was talking about new use cases for unique digital objects, and gave examples of different kinds of existing credentials/titles.

What if that digital file is the title to your car, deed to your home, your college degree, passport, driver’s license, etc?

Living in a digital world there are IMO fascinating use cases for unique (read non-copyable, self-custodied) digital objects.

What I’m not interested in are assumptions of limitations for things we barely understand.

Yeah I dunno man. NFTs at least allow for a softening of the walls in the garden. The potential is there for fun and interesting ideas like interoperability between games and game assets, and 3rd party platforms for buying, selling, and interacting with games and game assets.

At minimum it’s a combined digital proof of purchase and login credentials that you can custody yourself and transfer/sell at will without being forced to do so through the makers’ infrastructure.

People shitting on it seem to default to an oversimplified idea of what they are and can be, and a bad faith superiority on top.

That’s not something I get down with. I like new tech. I like experimentation. And I like seeing where things go rather than assuming I already know.

Nvm I misread your initial comment as saying they were shutting down their cryptocoin (as in a coin they launched themselves). Seems they’re shutting down the wallet bc it’s the most vulnerable to violating the vague regulations currently in place. They’ve still got the marketplace and recently announced a project called PlayR that looks to be a game streaming platform.

The regulatory environment isnt doing the NFT-based game ownership model any favors.

What cryptocoin?

We have tools both new and old to work collectively against megacorp consolidation and we can do it directly in the market. Here’s what I would love to see more of:

• Equity crowdfunding: Let’s have users/communities/customer bases finance new companies at the seed stage instead of relying almost exclusively on venture/investment banking-backed startups. I believe this greatly reduces the misalignment of stakeholder interests in finance/business even if they otherwise operate as conventional hierarchies. When customers own the business profit is no longer the fixation. It has to be self-sustaining but beyond that the focus can be on the ethical, sustained production and distribution of the good or service itself.
• Buying collectives: Let’s leverage our buying power to receive lower prices and have more say in the ethics of supply chains. This can happen at the individual level and amongst cooperative/independent/small chain retailers. This combined with equity crowdfunding implies an opportunity to work our way up (and down) the supply chain from consumer to retailer to distributors to manufacturer to collaborate with it when necessary compete with incumbents.
• Open Source R&D via Invective Prizes: Ever heard of the X-Prize? Imagine a crowdfunding platform where the crowd determines the goals for projects and contributes to the purse and people/teams compete to solve it. The winning submission open sources their result in exchange for the prize. This gives the crowd an alternative to corporate-funded IP held behind walled gardens purely to extract profit.
• Open, interoperable web infrastructure: Most features of social media platforms could be baked into protocols and made readable by any 3rd party software that chooses to integrate it. The fediverse we’re posting on right now is a great example. We have to have free, open digital communications to have agency as free peoples.

All these options reside naturally in a market-based economy and IMO empower political action while not inherently relying on it. It’s a powerful “yes, and”.

Meanwhile we’ve hit the elbow in the adoption curve for solar, wind, and EVs with grid-level batteries also on a major upswing.

Can’t quite put my finger on it but something about this doesn’t sit right with me

Abusing terminology, especially by marketers, is frustrating and cringe. But don’t underestimate the value in having a simple, shared term to describe a paradigm many things fit into.

Man that was trippy. Clicked my inbox and saw your message. Clicked it to reply and it brought the post back up. For the briefest if moments I saw dark blue/almost black and gold then it went right back go basically white. Like the image itself blinked but I have to assume it was my brain briefly interpreting it one way then reverting.
