  • She continued, "The most important thing is that we find a balance between the Hawaiian culture and tourism. Hawaiian people need to be benefiting from tourism equally. And I do not see that."

I think this is the best take. There will always be tourism in Hawaii, but that tourism needs to rebound in a way that will better benefit the local Hawaiians, and not wealthy corporations.

  • A day before Mayor Eric Adams set off through Latin America on a mission to slow the flow of migrants to his city

That’s a stunt if I’ve ever seen one. What does this one man think he’s going to do to stop the underlying forces causing the mass migrations?

  • The attempt to reinstall McCarthy faces long odds. Two strong candidates are running active campaigns with only days to go before voting, and many dozens of Republicans have already made endorsements. There is little reason to think the basic math for McCarthy has changed for McCarthy since last Tuesday.

Too many people still don’t like Kevin. I’m resigned that it’s going to be Gym Jordan.

  • Dictatorship used to be a temporary position, and the power was returned after the temporary (usually wartime) period had passed. This was the case until Caesar came along and decided he liked power a bit too much, and crossed the Rubicon to invade his home.

If they’d like to use Caesar as the metaphor, be prepared for another invasion of the capital. I guess any Republican leaders should also watch out for their senators and the Ides of March lol.

  • Vanguard assesses retirement readiness assuming your post-employment income should match around 68% of your annual salary.

Millennials in the 70th percentile of earners are the only demographic on track to come anywhere close to that coveted ratio. Early millennials are expected to hit 66% of their annual salary at retirement, while Gen X lags at 53% and late baby boomers at 51%.

Yay, wealthier Millennials? Way to grind that 401K

  • Instead, Kaufman said, the tourist was suffering from a mental disorder that psychiatrists have labeled the Jerusalem syndrome. The condition — a form of disorientation believed to be induced by the religious magnetism of the city, which is sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims — is said to cause foreign pilgrims to believe they are figures from the Bible.

    Well that’s a new one

  • declined to seek help because he didn’t want money to be deducted from his commissary account for a medical visit

The second portion of cruel and unusual punishment was required using commissary funds for medical bills. Health care should be a right for the incarcerated and the non-incarcerated alike.

  • Imperialism, that’s what this is. It’s a naked land (or, I guess, mainly water) grab for strategic reasons, from land that is already owned by other nations.

For many of the same reasons that we can’t allow Putin to take any more European land, if the world turns a blind eye to China brazenly stealing territory in the South China Sea, what will they take next?

  • House republicans are running their party like they have all three chambers, and a huge majority. In reality, they’ve only got 4 seats that they can afford to lose in the only chamber that they control. To pass a bill means doing it with Denocratic support (from the Senate and Executive).

They’re going to need to pick someone that basically all Republicans can agree on, so it’s not going to be one of the most extreme ones.
