  • It's not a chemical compound, the active component is an amebocyte. Same reason we can't just make red blood cells and need other humans to donate them.

There have been other attempts at making synthetic coagulants without broad success. The thing that seems to be the most effective at minimizing the horseshoe crab burden is using machines to do the detection and cut down on the amount of LAL needed vs running the test visually.

  • People also seem to forget that the secret service protection is granted by Congress as a privilege. It's not a right.

Congress can (theoretically...) amend any laws governing protection to not extend to those imprisoned.

I'd also wager that the secret service can assess what protection looks like. If they feel they can meet their obligations leveraging existing prison protocols, seems to be solvable (select only specific guards, certain cell blocks, etc).

I don't think this is the logistical nightmare people make it out to be.

  • What's the problem with "this movie will have firearms, we will teach you how to safely check each gun type and what to look for"

And then an actor, if they forget how when the armorer is handling them, be obligated to ask "how do I check this gun safely?"

People took shortcuts and didn't ask questions. Iff that's just the way it's done on movie sets, the behavior needs to change.

  • The crux of it isn't whether the law applies or not, it's whether the law should exist or not.

I argue the law is dumb or should have an expriy window of 50 years or whatever.

If they really wanted it, they should have found it themselves.

  • Wait 450 years and suddenly the sofa becomes an artifact with ownership as well?

If there is historical significance and there is a wish to preserve the item for the public and not let the finder keep the item, the finder should be compensated in cash at fair market value. This is actually done when people find things like viking coins, etc. It's much more reasonable of an approach.

Furthermore was Spain actively looking for it??
