Thanks, I think this is a good clarification, I had not encountered rerankers outside this specific implementation.

Obviously they were assuming balloons were filled with supervacuum. We have had 100 years and not invented even that.

Truly we have failed our ancestors.

For those (like me 10 minutes ago) who wonder what are reranker models...

Reranker models are models which can evaluate the semantic similarity of two pieces of text. They can be used to improve RAG systems which use embeddings to look for relevant documents. The reranker model can then be used to select the best candidates.

This improves the result, because reranker models look at the two pieces of content simultaneously and can be fine tuned to the domain in question. They shouldn't be used for the initial retrieval because the evaluation time is O(n²) as each combination of input and document pair needs to be evaluated as a pair.

For 2. I feel also like arriving with shields up and then bringing them down is a strong message too, when communicating peaceful intent. Familiar races would also come to recognize that this is how starfleet does things and not consider the default aggressive.

I know exactly what you mean.

It's like sleep is trying to pull you in with whisps of itself like the enticing fingers of a lover. You act coy, trying to keep afloat because the boundary feels... Exquisite. The whisps become more demanding little by little until finally you succumb and let them take you in and it feels like floating though clouds of immaterial boobs.

And then you are asleep.

This is what I come to the comments for.

In Finland there is a party whose social feed was full of line items from the national budget they thought worth eliminating.

It's really the only time when I've seen someone really take a look at the budget and try to figure out how to save from the non-essentials instead of arguing about how much to spend on eg. Hospitals vs defence.

My wife pricked her finger on a sharp growth as we were entering an old warship at a depth of about 35 meters. I remember the dark green strands coming out of her vividly. It looked very alien, accentuated by the fact the bridge of the old ship was overgrown with sea life, yet it was somehow a distinctly human environment.

I don't think the above poster doubts their ability, only that they might be less incentivized to do so compared to, say a country that has repeatedly voiced their wish to annex Canada.

As I understand accounting, you really don't need to do stuff like this to write off your assets.

I'm not saying there isn't a cynical corporate reason for doing this but I doubt this is it.
