Although optimistically a lot of the way the government was designed is to prevent exactly the type of person that Trump is becoming president, tyranny of the minority is part of the system. EC and the senate are definitely designed in a way to prevent the unwashed masses from gaining too much power, and keep in mind when the framers were designing this we're talking only about white land-owning men. Our government's design is progressive for its time compared to a literal monarchy, but it's still clearly designed with a caste system in mind.

This is going to be the subtitle for whoever writes the book about Trump in a few years.

Oh god yes. There is now a blanket rule in our house that we only buy one system of storage. At some point, we revisit. I think on our next revisit, we might just go to deli-tainers.

As for socks, and I must state for clarity, this has been done against my will, we have at least, at least, 17 different types of socks. I have made clear, that the first thing we do when we win the lottery or whatever is declare sockruptcy, throw those all away, and just buy one at-least-ok sock.

Think of how much absolute bullshit we would have avoided if turnout in 2016 wasn't so low for Hilary, and people didn't waste their vote on a deliberate spoiler candidate with Jill Stein. You can probably put some numbers on it - how many would not be dead if a rational leader had been overseeing the pandemic? Republicans wouldn't have the Supreme Court, Roe wouldn't have been over turned, we wouldn't have the SC legislating from the bench in regards to EPA/climate change, we could have actual gun legislation, and so much more. The list goes on and on.

Even in 2016, before we knew the depths of how far Trump would sink, we knew he was on tape advising how to commit sexual assault, had been accused of sexual assault by over 20 women, we knew he was racist and demonstrably so, we knew he was a conman that hadn't ever really accomplished anything (unless a record for companies bankruptcies is something?)

But hey, Hilary wasn't "inspiring."

There is a reason there is so much effort to prevent people from voting in this country. There was a deliberate effort in 2016 to convince you that your vote didn't matter, Hilary had it locked up, etc. There is a deliberate effort in basically every red state to gerrymander so progressives can't get ahead.

So anyway, these comments are doing their work for them. Our government has many problems, but the general thing is that it moves slow. If you want to see positive change, vote, and then have an attention span and keep voting.

This is what is so, so frustrating. I've watched this cycle my entire life, and though I wouldn't really be politically aware until about 99-2000 as Clinton left office, it's the same cycle repeated and has been since at least Reagan. Republicans come in, cut taxes for the rich, start wars, and slowly chip away at our basic liberties. Democrats come in, start in the middle of a war, an economic recession, now a pandemic, etc, and have to clean it up. And then everyone gets pissed off because the dems can't clean it up fast enough and like it's fucking groundhog day, the country forgets and decides what's going to fix it is changing back to the side the caused the fucking problem.

The most mouth breather dumb shit take I hear especially on Lemmy is that "dems just don't inspire enough" so people are going to sit it out or vote third party (which means, help Republicans win.) Well, I guess the absolute dumbest take is voting Republican. Doing the boring ass work and making tiny in roads is not inspiring, but it's how you get to watershed moments. Republicans know this, they've been working for 50 years to overturn Roe, to further the wealth divide, to lock down your civil liberties.

I mean, it's a bummer when the bougie burger places do this, but when the taco trucks and teriyaki shops near me started costing more than $2 a taco or $10 for a plate of yakisoba, I knew shit was getting hard out there.

I mean, it's splitting hairs. While the proximity probably didn't help, I doubt the companies deciding to pull ads weren't like "sure, we don't mind hanging out in a nazi bar, just make sure not to seat us next to any nazis." I mean, some probably were, but there has been increasingly large amounts of pressure on these people and within like 24 hours of each other Elon endorses replacement theory and the MM story drops that Elon is running ads for nazis. There are only so many times you can make a dumb excuse. For lots of us, that was a long time ago. Even the capitalists are realizing now at least that he's bad for business.

Like, really looking forward to court case when Elon or Yacco have to explain "yes your honor, the thing they said is true, but to get it to happen they had to use our platform!!!" If I had to guess, Elon has to know he's going to lose, but the point isn't necessarily a win, it's to tie up Media Matters in a legal battle that Elon can keep going effectively forever. This is one of his favorite tactics – doing whatever the fuck he wants because he knows the only thing you can do is sue, and he can pay lawyers forever so you're going to have to blink first.

Generally, yes, but if you're in a mixed environment than Firefox makes some sense because at least for me, I want cross-browser syncing on all of the devices I use most. I have a PC for gaming and the occasional need to use a PC at work, so I keep Firefox on iOS for this type of thing, but that mostly just acts as a place to push things to from Safari.

Even if they do use the same browser engine, the feature sets may be worth it. Orion, for example, I really wanted to like and work well since you can use a lot of the desktop add ons in both the Firefox and Chrome add-on store, but it was just too buggy to daily drive.

Lots of people are covering the actual answer, but this is one of the reasons I default to duck duck go on everything - the bang operator. For example:

I have a bunch of these that I use all of the time:

• !imdb, uh, imdb
• !nf, Netflix
• retired now but !r searches reddit
• !so, stack overflow
• !w, wikipedia.

I guess they're up to nearly 14k of these now so chances are the thing you want to search is in the list. Aside from that, Google's search results are increasingly garbage these days and filled with ads, so while I used to get a lot of use out of !g and !gi, I really don't any longer.

This is what I do as well. Fortunately, Apple doesn't really need to make money from the browser, so imo it's still the "cleanest" experience. Meaning, It's just a browser. It doesn't want to sell you a VPN or crypto or get you to upgrade to a paid tier reading service, and integration in the ecosystem is obviously better.

I still really like Firefox, and that's what I use as a backup on Macs, and primary on my PCs. There have been increasing number of rumors though that Apple is going to open up the App Store requirements in some way though that might allow Firefox to use it's own engine on iOS, and if they do that I'll probably switch over for a while and kick the tires.

There was a tiny window of time back before like 2010 where Google was legitimately a good choice. At the time Chrome came out, Firefox was having some notorious performance/bloat issues, and conversely Chrome was light and fast. Lots of stuff that came out around 2000-2010 from Google was legit best in class, and they were still generally in their "don't be evil era." That's obviously gone way out the window and has for some time. I started switching away from Google stuff around the time they killed Reader, and I'm glad I did because they've only gotten increasingly awful.

Yeah, this is def a thing that is a big sticking point for me. I have a hard time supporting a company these days without a clear revenue plan because it's just kind of a bait-and-switch otherwise.

I am skeptical of Bluesky. It's led by Jack and we've already seen how that goes. Second, there isn't really a good technical reason for it to exist as it's own protocol outside of the fact that they want to control it given that Fedi/Mastodon was already there and they could have just as easily contributed to that with the things they wanted, they just wouldn't have had full control. Similar to Threads promise to federate, I will be somewhat surprised if they ever do it.

Were Bluesky/Threads not a corporate effort, I have a feeling that it would have followed a similar pattern as the fediverse - build the protocol and release that, then the clients will follow. Bluesky still isn't federating even with its own protocol, and Threads isn't either. Given that's stuff that tiny teams with far, far fewer resources than the corps have accomplished, it's a little wild that neither have gotten there.

Especially with Bluesky, there doesn't seem to be a stated plan for how it's going to make money. And we're talking about a lot of the same people that destroyed the Twitter API and started locking things down even before Elon killed it completely and they're trying to convince us that they are pushing for an open environment.
