Your comment, which I quoted in my reply, is itself a speculative and anecdotal piece of data. My "vitriolic" anecdote is literally just an anecdote, which is in no way vitriolic. My "inflammatory" comments? Can we not say fuck on the internet anymore?

I also work in IT supporting various tablets. Have to go back a little bit before USB C was gaining traction, but We mostly use iPads (like 4-5x more iPads) but used Fire tablets with micro USB. The iPads get used like iPads, the Fire tablets were mostly stationary. Since like 2015 when we adopted iPads, I've never had to replace due to a failed port. We stopped buying Fire tablets because I had to replace about 1/3 of them due to failure of the port in around 2 years of service vs 8 years on the iPads with no failures.

Granted, this sample size here is only like 50 devices in total so I'm sure it's just more "vitriolic" anecdata.

Good point. On the positive side, I've never seen a Lightning port fail in my family, my extended family, or from any of my friends, or in my job. Another positive is micro USB is almost dead and replaced by much less trash connectors. Golly gee don't tell micro USB all the micro USB stans (which I guess have shown up exclusively for this thread) I said that, would hate to offend. Of all of the things I've ever said on the internet, boy did I not expect calling micro-usb garbage to be controversial.

I’m skeptical that this happens anywhere remotely near frequently enough to condemn the entire technology. Never seen it, and never heard about it until just now.

I have three kids. I have had to buy parts off of eBay and replace the ports on both of my PS4 controllers. They see way, way less use than any of the kids iPhones, or mine or my wife's. I have a Kindle that has to be propped "just-so" to charge.

I really don't give much a shit if everyone in this thread hates apple, but micro-usb is a fucking garbage connector that frankly, USB-C shares too much in common with. If you stepped on a lightning cable that was in a device, you probably need a new cable. If stepped on a micro-usb, you probably need a new device and new cable. USB-C, you need a new cable and you might need a new device (see also, me figuring out how to fix the kids oculus this week.)

My latest ad-shock was over at a friend's house. I've not had cable since probably '03? They have cable because a parent lives with them and insists/pays. Just having the TV on playing random things felt weird. Weirder still is having the movie interrupted by ads every 5 seconds. And the ads are just gross. The only thing that was decent was using it as a discovery service. The movie, one of the X-Men that was not one of the good ones, was what we stumbled upon. We watched for a bit, then ended up switching to watching it elsewhere to dunk on it. In ad-free, interruption-free, 4k with surround. Paying for the cable experience (which is rapidly the streaming experience) seems entirely anachronistic.

This is kind of the same reason, I think. They get enough validation on the internet and unfortunately this leads to more validation IRL as well. Humans and critical thinking already rarely go together, and social media only seems to have exasperated that.

I think there is a large amount of this that's the result of social media. When I was a kid, there were still flat-earthers and other people who believe extremely stupid things. The thing was, however, that if you said that out loud, all of the people around you would with varying degrees of politeness tell you you're a fucking idiot and you'd usually change your mind quickly. In today's environment, not only can you go online and not get called a fucking idiot for your dumb opinions, you can find all of the other fucking idiots and form a circle-jerk Facebook group for bad opinions and feel validated in believing them. Oh, and even if you don't go looking for your own little community of morons, Facebook and the rest will happily help surface those morons for you.

Though they didn't help, honestly the faux both-sides "journalism" is taking its own L's, mostly. I canceled my sub to the Times quite a while back because of this type of thing, and I find it rare to see actual journalism quite a lot of the time. Headlines like "deadlock in congress due to continued failure to reach consensus on tax bill." Actual reality: Republicans want to cut taxes for the wealthy and provide loopholes for yacht owners with no plan to pay for it, Democrats want to spend approx 0.00000001% of the military budget to provide free meals for elementary students.

See also, any trans issues. "Controversy roils over trans athletes in sports." Reality: one fucking asshole in Iowa or Idaho or Mississippi or wherever want to blanket ban on trans athletes in sport because one MTF wants to play a sport. Oh, and they don't even have a kid that goes to the school/participates in the sport and the MTF player hasn't broken the top 10.

I don't think we have to get even as far as the technically-legal but obviously shady as fuck outcomes like this, but just look at the last presidential election. Our votes only mattered because they didn't manage to get away with ignoring them, and that's largely just because a couple of people found the barest of morals and they were rampantly incompetent.

Micro-usb is just about the most garbage connector in the last 30 years. I'd damn near rather Apple have actually sent me a breadboard and some leads than have that connector.

Tbh this is thing I'm not excited about the USB-C future on. On paper, I would expect that Lightning be more problematic since the springy bits are on device rather than the connector. In practice, I've never seen a Lightning port fail since it's come out. Micro-USB, which is much closer to USB-C in design (obviously with improvement) for me has basically come with an expiration date. I don't have enough USB-C stuff yet to say if that's going to continue, but it's a concern for sure.

This is the amazingly, insanely stupid thing about the idea that at least for Apple's Pro line, which they'll painstakingly put together videos showing iPhones being used as actual movie cameras in big gimbal rigs and how they can capture 4k60 and put messages in the OS that shooting 20 minutes of video is going to take your entire phone storage even if you got the big one, and the options for transfer are wifi or USB 2.0. For a potential terabyte. Very Pro to sit and wait for an hour or several.

I honestly feel like it's a mistake that USB-C means almost nothing outside of "it's got this port shape." The idea was that you have one port and one cable, and you plug whatever you want into it. In practice, virtually no where is this true. Is this a data port or power only? What speed for either? Does the port support Thunderbolt or no? Video or no? Does the cable support data or just power? What speed? Video? Which HDMI spec? Thunderbolt? Grab 3 random devices with USB-C and 3 random USB-C cables and see how often you get the intended outcome.

Tbh I think the only goal that USB-C really accomplishes is that it's less shitty than micro-usb (might as well make all of those ports/connectors out of paper mache) or USB-A (let's make a port shape that there is no way for anyone living or dead to plug in correctly the first time.)
