  • Hmm. Never heard of a demake outside the context of an underpowered console or handheld, like 360 games being published for the Wii.

  • I've been playing the RTX mod for Half-Life 1 recently. If its fun to see old games with new techniques on them, what about new games made to look old? I'd love to see someone make a tool that does the opposite of RTX remix - downscale all the textures and simplify the models, remove a ton of shaders and such. Probably never gonna happen, but it's a cool idea.

  • A bigger one is what does it say about the product? People are already using low settings disingenuously to say X game is ugly and not up to par, a potato setting would just exacerbate this and from an art standpoint do the developer really want to stand behind such a gimped product?

To clarify, I'm not saying that games should design for the lowest level of hardware, but they should make it easier for people with lower tier hardware to adjust the game to run better. Some people might use it disingenuously, but I really think people will see right through that if the potato setting became common enough.

You made another point about lower details not being enough. In cases where it isn't possible to improve performance without sacrificing gameplay, I think developers should put gameplay before making the game playable with older hardware. Its not about demanding all games be playable on a mid-range machine from 2010, its about asking developers to make an honest effort where possible.

As for FSR, I don't think its a full solution since it still uses the same model and texture quality as the lowest setting (if not higher), which could mean higher VRAM use than needed. I'd rather see FSR paired with downscaled textures and simplified models.

  • Seems like you know a log about the topic. Do you think its better to push for RCS to become the new standard, just because it has momentum? Or would you rather we encourage Google, Apple, the carriers, etc., to switch over to something like Matrix or Signal?

  • They should. Absolutely. I think the ideal would be that the EU require Google to open up RCS to be interoperable with other standards like Matrix and Signal. But even barring that, requiring Apple to support RCS would be a massive improvement.

I just don't want to accidentally give Google the power we're trying to take from Apple. That just puts us back at square one.

  • RCS isn't as open as SMS, it's just as proprietary as iMessage, Google has just expressed a willingness to let other companies use it. They're playing nice because they're the underdog in the US market. If RCS becomes the new standard, Google will exploit that fact.

  • I'm gonna make a game where the graphics are basically the same at all presets, but with different filters. Crank the bloom and add a sepia filter, call it pro max or something.

  • Probably the same reason they use the word "model" instead of just calling it an embryo. They don't want to make it sound like they're experimenting on an actual human embryo (even though that's basically what it is). That's the real ethical question here. At what point does this become experimentation on humans? This also steps into basically the same problem as the abortion debate, which is more heated than I'd like to get here.

  • I think it's their profile picture.

Edit: I just got Lemmy Premium.

  • Or vigilante justice

    Florida Man origin story?

  • It's not a balanced meal without an Epyc 128-core CPU, a terabyte of RAM, and a custom one-of-a-kind case.

  • We've been pointing out that Zelenskyy is Jewish since the beginning. You know, for day five-hundred-and-something of the three day special military operation, that's a pretty good comeback. /S

  • I expect that the Very Short Treks won't be entirely non-canon. For instance, some episode might introduce an event, place, or technology that is actually canon even if the events of the episode itself are not canon.

Alternatively, they could be loosely canon in the same way as the Lego Star Wars shows/games, with the rough events and plots being canon even if exact details are not.

  • I like the implication that someone put the Sega Dreamcast into their contacts list.

  • Probably just down to less stuff running in the background using up CPU cycles. I can't imagine it makes a huge difference, but more than nothing.

  • I hope so...but humans only please.

  • American democracy could be significantly improved just by adding term limits Senators and Representatives, plus an age cap for Congress and the President. Taking steps to break the two party system would be even better.

I personally like Germany's approach to parliamentary representation, where you vote for both a district representative and a party. Once the district seats are filled, more seats are added until each party is proportionally represented. This goes a long way to reducing the spoiler effect and helping third parties get a voice.

I know this is a controversial take, but I actually like the electoral college in principle. The goal of the electoral college is to balance the interests of urban and rural voters so that whoever wins the election will hopefully be good for both. Currently, electoral votes are distributed based on the results of simple majority votes at the state level, with some states including a 'winner takes all' rule. If it were up to me, I'd instead use state level alternative votes or something similar, and ban the 'winner takes all's rule.

However, I don't think we will see any of these in a very long time, if ever. The current system benefits the people currently in it, why would they change it? IIRC, the UK had a referendum to switch voting systems years ago, and their two biggest parties banded together to pressure voters to keep the existing system.

  • Probably because we're too comfortable interacting with online strangers with the protection of semi-anonymity.

  • With an enemy so blatantly evil that they attack children, we should be ashamed that we aren't doing more to defeat Russia.
