  • Costs associated with illegal immigration aren't really all that clear cut, from what I've seen. Undocumented immigrants generate a lot of revenue and economic activity and pay a lot in taxes while not being able to use most government services.

The major drag on revenues that I was able to find is on state/local governments that fund education for undocumented children, which should probably be remedied with more federal funding to offset.

Tons of datapoints cited at the Wikipedia page on the subject

  • This is basically little more than a committee, they can't just create a new branch of government by fiat. It's normal for vice presidents to head "task forces" or committees when the administration wants to focus attention on a given issue.

Cf. Pence's role in the COVID task force and Space Council and Biden's role on the middle class task force during the Obama administration.

When vice presidents aren't breaking tie votes in the Senate, this kind of stuff is basically all they have to do anyway. What is it you think the VP is supposed to be spending their time doing?

  • In the US, the science courses for lower grades, like grades k through 6, are usually sort of like survey courses. So there might be one unit of biology, one unit of some really basic physics stuff, one about space, etc. Once you get into higher grades it will change over to a whole course on biology followed by chemistry the next year or whatever.

  • I mostly just feel sad watching Dave Rubin talk to people who clearly afford him 0 actual respect.

The look on his face when he just has to casually pretend that it's just a "difference of opinion" when people treat him like garbage to his face is hard to stomach.

He's getting paid and serving their purposes. He's actively harming his own community, so I know I shouldn't afford him much sympathy. Still feels bad to watch though.

  • "Also, you hear stories about groomers." Here's the thing: grooming is a real thing, and it has nothing to do with being trans or letting kids know that trans people exist.

The sad part about all of this groomer talk from the right is: now this language is politically coded and no longer useful for discussing real grooming like high school teachers doing sketchy stuff with their students.

Not that anyone using this language cares about the well-being of actual children, but if they did you'd think they might consider something like this.

  • If conversations with this one person are frequently reaching the point where things like that are being said, it seems pretty clear cut: you should honestly just avoid any of the topics that have resulted in debates with this person.

It doesn't necessarily mean you can't talk to them about other things or that you can't be friends (although it might).

Not every relationship has to allow for talking about all topics.

Sometimes being right isn't actually important and can actually be counterproductive with certain people/topics.
