Machine learning based pattern matching is indeed very useful and profitable when applied correctly. Identify (with confidence levels) features in data that would otherwise take an extremely well trained person. And even then it's just for the cursory search that takes the longest before presenting the highest confidence candidate results to a person for evaluation. Think: scanning medical data for indicators of cancer, reading live data from machines to predict failure, etc.
And what we call "AI" right now is just a much much more user friendly version of pattern matching - the primary feature of LLMs is that they natively interact with plain language prompts.

I switched from developing apps for sale to developing apps for use by internal customers. The dynamic shift was huge. I was always promoting fixes that would make our app more useful (and reducing technical debt) for our customers and I would get told no. Why? Because those fixes would often reduce income from services and maintenance.
Fuck that. The second I switched to producing for internal customers I was able to implement those changes and cut out huge amounts of shit that was left in place purely to cause external customers to purchase service contracts.
Customers DO know what's right. VP of Sales DOES know what makes them money. The two things are often polar opposites.
The buybacks are always bankrupted by guys showing up with 3d printed guns. What SHOULD be done is if it is 3d printed, they offer them the cost of the filament by weight and tell them the buyback is for people who aren't trying to intentionally be pieces of shit and waste the money.
