  • I think you might misunderstand what GitHub actually is.

It's a version control service for source code and being able to download released artifacts is an extra feature on top of that.

git = software to manage and track changes to source code

GitHub = a service to host your git source code repositories

The uncompiled source code is kinda the whole point of GitHub in the first place

  • The taxes should probably be based on some combination of usage and gross vehicle weight. People driving more with heavy vehicles ought to pay a larger share of road maintenance. A gas tax somewhat handles this since people with larger vehicles who drive more will use more gas.

But the gas taxes don't even cover all of the money spent on maintaining/upgrading the roads. Roads are very expensive especially when you have these large highway interchange projects. We should really be trying to get people away from driving cars and onto transit, biking, walking etc. as much as possible

  • I guess I still disagree with that premise. A single Netflix subscription offers more variety of content than a basic cable package for a lot less money.

And if you rotate services every 1-2 months you can get all the choice in content for a lot less money than a cable bundle that way as well.

It's like saying there are too many restaurants because if you ate at all of them every month it would be more expensive than going to one really expensive restaurant that serves every type of food. Meanwhile it's cheaper if you choose 1-2 of the cheaper restaurants to eat from every month and rotate. Probably a bad analogy but that's kinda what I'm trying to say

  • I agree, streaming was a lot better when the main players didn't produce their own content. And it could get to be a bigger problem as the streaming players consolidate more which we're already seeing with the HBO+Discovery merger for instance.

Not to mention how much media is consolidated under Disney currently.

  • This is assuming that you actually pay for all the services simultaneously. I still think streaming is a way better service since it's easier to pick and choose what you want.

Plus there are no long term contracts and no equipment rentals to worry about. And canceling can be done by clicking some buttons on my phone in seconds whereas with cable you have to block off time on your calendar to sit on the phone for an hour to cancel.

It's annoying to see these comparisons with cable cause it's like people forgot how bad of a consumer experience it actually is.

  • Not the person you're replying to but I sometimes have issues with PWAs not loading when I open them and then I have to close it and re-open to get it to load

That's the only major issue I have and I find the ability to use ad blockers as well as the nice reading mode to make my overall mobile browsing experience leagues better than with Chrome

  • I ride a lot in my city and thunderstorms can happen several times a week where I live during certain parts of the year. Usually I can plan around them and if it's really so stormy I don't think I can bike then it's usually better if I don't drive anywhere either.

The main one that gets me is when I pick up my kid from school. Just rain and I'll bike but if there's lightning I occasionally need to take the car for safety.

  • Well in a way yes but that's how the federation/decentralization works. It's like with email everyone gets a copy and if a message doesn't go through to someone it can be redelivered.

Centralized services are usually more efficient than decentralized but that's not the primary goal of the fediverse
