  • The thing is we are undergoing one of the most exponential acceleration of technology and society that we have ever experienced as a species by many metrics (even tho many will say we are living in the worst time ever, by other metrics). The last decade corporations threw a shitton of money at seemingly impractical and impossible ideas. Convince strangers to get in other strangers cars to replace taxis and limos? No problem you've just created a whole new "profitable" sector that redefined society all over the world. Create 10 separate Netflix's spending billions of dollars you shouldn't have, ruining your best IP thru oversaturation , and it failed? Everyone should have known this hurr durr. As dumb as the Hyperloop always has been and still is, I do get why so much money and hype went into it during a decade where the impossible and impractical routinely became commonplace

  • I could see one that focused on CDC / nih data and communications. I use clinicaltrials.gov all the time for work to look at study designs for big clinical trials, could be cool to have an instance that covered info from there. I could see another one maybe for weather and traffic related data from NOAA, state highway authorities, etc. maybe another space related one for NASA and space force (lol). Others for the military branches, it goes on and on. The government has social media accounts for most of these services already, could give the fediverse a big boost if their content is directly hosted on government servers

  • I mean WFH was literally impossible for a lot of jobs until broadband internet and personal computers became ubiquitous in the average workers home in the last decade or so. That's part of why yor boss felt entitled to all that, but I see the rest of your points

  • Find me an electric car with drive assist on local roads in all 50 states. Then also find me a car that has a Ryzen processor and web browser where I can load streaming NBA playoff games while I'm charging. And most importantly, find me an electric company with the charging network Tesla has, today, not in a few years when it's "opened up". Then get out of your mom's basement.

Yes Elon fucking sucks, so do all ceos. I bought a used Tesla and Ive had a great experience with it

  • Really has been rough to have so much bad shit happen for the former president and not hear Seth or Colbert be able to enjoy it. Honestly 45 is so lucky the writers strike happened when it did. Hopefully it resolves before primary season heats up

  • I might take a hit of cancer every now and then. I'm still checking in on Twitter for some sports journalists I follow but do most of my browsing on lemmy/mastodon. I could see doing the same with threads if it really does kill Twitter.

  • My problem is perfectionism/anxiety/procrastination loop. "oh I gotta write a good reply to this text" --> "fuck I can't think of the right words, that's making me anxious -> "I'll do it later when I can do it properly and I won't be anxious" -> 2 weeks later -> "fuck why am I so bad at this"

  • Each tweet also shares the approx fuel used, cost of that fuel, and most importantly, CO2 released into the atmosphere with each flight. All that info isn't as accessible to non flight enthusiasts with only a call sign.

  • Lemmy/mastodon for mindless browsing has replaced reddit/Twitter for me. For specific research/googling on a niche topic, I still find reddit threads popping up all the time so I'll still click those to learn more, but they web browser only.
