You gotta wait for overture maps alternatives. It is an open map project by the linux foundation, microsoft, tomtom and some other companies. Its main purpose is to provide a competent competitor to google maps since these companies don't want to pay google royalties for their map data. It can also help osm since it is under an open license i think. It is still in alpha though at the time of writing this...
I think they meant it as a "necessary evil" because companies could start implementing their own drm and make everything more difficult to crack. Also without it, companies would not trust it without drm due to the greed.
I don't rely on Chrome... It is just that i am scared of being forced to use it... I already use linux and firefox and privacy respecting alternatives... I just don't want to be forced to give up these things...
People using whatever they want on their devices. Everything converges into one of everything (eg. Chrome). Yes calling that lack of freedom of expression is a bit of a stretch but when you comsider how much reliance people have on this software, it becomes clear that people don't have much freedom of using whatever they want to fulfill an ethical consumption lifestyle. Everything is locked down and nobody cares... That is a problem.
