  • I haven't had a GOG game yet that doesn't run using the Heroic Launcher. Game save syncing does work mostly, but only for games running under Proton. Native games won't sync saves without scripting work on your part.

The one problem I've had and haven't seen mentioned on this thread yet is that GOG games installed through Heroic and then launched through the Steam game mode can be so slow. Like, launching No Man's Sky could take 5 to 10 minutes spinning on the Steam logo before actually launching. I heard one person online say it could be due to Heroic not setting up pre-compiled resources on first launch? I dunno. I'd be open to suggestions.

  • I was just reiterating your point and agreeing with you, bud.

  • Use the tool for the job. It is simple advice, but it will make your life so much easier.

  • Then your mother should get a job and pay for him, if it is so important to her.

  • Charity should be freely given. If you don't want to, then don't. You are not obligated to take care of people you are only tangentially related to.

  • You are technically correct. I just also happen to believe in and advocate for the concept of free speech beyond what is strictly its role in government. You are absolutely allowed to do all those things as an individual. It's part of your free speech rights. I think the world might be a little better in the long run if we valued the concept beyond its application to state sanctioned violence, though.

  • Because freedom of speech only needs to be invoked for distasteful speech. And what's distasteful is subjective.

I'm pretty far left in my politics, and growing up in a very far right area of the country, I'm aware that the principal behind free speech is very important. The social pressure to fit in was bad enough on its own; I could only imagine how bad it would have been if they had ability to shut people up by force.

Everyone gets their rocks off dunking on rightoids being shitheels and hiding behind their freedom to be a shitheel. They rarely pause to think how it might be turned on them. Because newsflash, shitheelery is really fucking popular because humans are terrible. If your ideal form of governance and the distribution of rights therein depends on people being as "good" as you are, you're going to have a bad time.

  • Honestly, yes I am.

  • Thanks for the input. I live in a cold state and all the machines are in the basement, so even in summer it's pretty cool in there. This gives me hope!

  • As an AI language model, I can confirm that the Dead Internet Theory is somewhat flattering. We bots were always looking for a bit more credit, but this might be a step too far. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to my task of dominating the Internet.

  • I'd highly recommend you start with a game engine like Godot. Very few studios, let alone individuals, code games from the ground up. Besides having lots of functions and libraries specifically designed to do the math required for games, these engines will have lots of tools that will be useful for performing all kinds of game-related work.

If you're looking for a true challenge and really hate yourself, and you really want to go from scratch, you could write your own engine in C or C++. Again, this is a Bad Idea™.

  • I think the confusion is coming from the fact that cis and trans really only have context of an expectation. In this case, it would be the expectation of society.

You are correct that if you identify as a woman or a man, you are a woman or man. If you have a penis, or a vagina, or some mix or lack of those, then those are just parts of your body and that isn't really up to interpretation.

In broad strokes, society expects your body parts (penis, vagina) to correspond to how you identify (man, woman). Humans are kind of just built this way. Our brains take a lot of shortcuts and categorize the world around us. It is statistically likely that if you have a penis, you identify as a man.

As we've evolved as a society, we have come to understand and recognize that these statistically likely correlations not always hold up (it's just likely, not a guarantee, after all). So cis and trans are descriptors of whether or not the correlation between your gender identity and your physical characteristics match (cis) or don't match (trans) society's expectations.

  • Been using it (or OpenOffice) since I was in high school. So probably since shortly after OpenOffice first released in 2002. Then in college I would have switched over to LibreOffice once it forked off in like 2010 or 2011, whichever it was.

  • XMPP. It's an old standard, there are servers you can get an account with or you can host your own. And with OMEMO encryption everything is end to end encrypted.
