  • I think in an ideal world, I’d set speed limits to be higher than they are now - say, (spitballing) 100mph for interstates.

I suspect many cars on the road can't even be driven safely at that speed, and then you have to account for the driving ability of the average person.

You'd have more cases where there are high speed differentials too with some only going 60mph, and others going 100mph, increasing the amount of passing.

  • My gut tells me that, just due to the relatively sparse density of cars, rural driving is already significantly safer, and if you DO drive like shit, you’re likely to only injure yourself.

Fatalities are typically more common in rural areas (proportional to population). Likely because of higher speed roads and higher drink driving rates in rural areas. And maybe due to truck drivers and people driving long distances driving sleep deprived.

  • You're right that streets should be designed such that low speeds feel inevitable and not something you have to think about, and that they should serve one purpose and not two (no stroads). And highways should completely bypass cities, because the idea that they should cut through them is just absurd.

Where are the cameras catching tailgaters, people who don’t signal, people cutting others off, people cruising in the left and not passing, people blatantly running stop signs, people texting or doing makeup?

The technology to do this is more challenging then detecting speeding. Red-light cameras are also very common, because they are relatively easy to implement. I believe there is some tech for texting while driving at least, but I'm not sure how automated it is.

  • Podcasting is the better space to get going.

Joe Rogan and other right-wing cranks.

    Also tictoc.

A significant part of the rise of fascism in Europe among young people.

Anyway I do like podcasts, and it's full of good content (and so is tiktok presumably) but neither are lacking right-wing content.

  • I was thinking more about the apparent changes in legislation, so the issue could reappear. It's hard to tell if the author is overreacting or how it will actually pan out, since it's all a bit incoherent to me.

  • Will be interesting to see if this applies to Vodafone, as I haven't seen any messages despite using an imported phone. And the messages I received from Telstra were somewhat justified as the phone is missing B28, but that's more of a coverage issue.

A shitshow in any case. VoLTE should really have been a core part of 4G and not this tacked on proprietary upgrade.

  • Turnout is typically very poor amongst young people. It will be interesting to see how much young people vote, and the gender breakdown. Because if turnout is consistent across gender, then any of those gains will be wiped out by young women leaning strongly progressive (or at least, liberal).

  • Not to put too fine a point on it, but those documents were stolen in DC, not Florida. Sure there could be “both”, but seriously.

I believe the idea was that if he was convicted in Florida by a Republican biased jury, there would be fewer claims of it being rigged or whatever. Seems stupid in hindsight since Cannon ended up being assigned the case.

  • Youtube isn't just a thing people use to waste time, but a source of educational content. That actually matters, and there isn't a good alternative to much of it.

That being said, I agree that people could at least drop it (or reduce their usage) if they are just using it as a time waster.

  • What headphones in particular are you using? Because with standard AD2P you're limited to mSBC at best, but maybe your device has some proprietary implementation.

You could try with a hardware dongle, but no guarantee that will work either.

At least in the long run it should be fixed by Bluetooth LE audio, but I'm not sure if the Deck properly supports it yet, and it requires new audio devices as well.

  • Pulseaudio has been pretty solid for a while now which is what the steamdeck uses from what i can see online.

It uses Pipewire, but it has pretty close to full API compatibility with Pulseaudio (and Jack) so most applications will "just work" and you get lower and more stable latency in return.
