  • It uses the Calibre database but isn't a frontend per se. With care, you could share the db between the two, and just call up the desktop version when dedrm is needed. There's also a docker mod with the LSIO container but I think it only supports format conversion.

  • I'd call it sanewashing but I think anyone that likes Trump doesn't seem to perceive how stupid the all-caps writing makes him look.

Which makes sense, as the authors of all of the scam websites and chain letters since the 2000s love to overuse emphasis which seems to appeal to the easiest marks.

  • Less than $10 a year depending on top-level domain and provider.

There's also 1.111B class xyz domains which are very cheap number only domains at 1 USD a year or so but are longer and less memorable. Useful for private/test uses, although I wouldn't use it for anything public.

  • One benefit is to obtain SSL certificates using Let's Encrypt or similar, which is nice to have even if you're only hosting services on a LAN/VPN, to avoid certificate warnings (and to benefit from using a reverse proxy). You can use self-signed certificates, but this is annoying in its own right.

You technically don't need to buy a domain for this since you can use a free DNS provider, but you can use shorter names and sometimes there are cases where you might need to switch DNS providers, in which case you have to change that domain everywhere, which is quite disruptive. If you own your domain, you take it with you when switching DNS providers.

  • Plenty of regular, stupid people have been convinced that a worse deal is better if they’re making someone domestic richer instead of someone foreign.

No, regular people don't understand how tariffs work at all. They literally think that Canada, Mexico, and China are the ones that pay the tariffs.

  • Most of the good NBN ISPs have dual stack networks with a delegated ipv6 prefix and will turn off CG-NAT by request on the ipv4 side:

    • Superloop (and exetel as same underlying network)
    • Leaptel ($1 extra month for a static ipv6 prefix)
    • Aussie Broadband
    • Launtel
  • Pathetic from Great Northern to capitulate so easily. Although I wonder if their capitulation will still trigger the right-wing snowflakes:

Our donation to the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife will now not be used to buy land to add to National Parks. Our donation will instead be used for the preservation of endangered species,” he said.

  • What does ipv6 give you that ipv4 does not?

A public, directly routable IP address which doesn't cost a fortune for the ISPs. In fact, an incomprehensible number of public, directly routable IPs per user such that it's an embarrassment of riches compared to ipv4 (the only important limitations are more down to the number of subnets per user, which is usually still way more than you need at 256 for /56 prefixes).

And it's even better if all devices and networks support it, since you no longer have to rely on n layers of NAT, reducing latency and complexity.
