I was more replying to you, that it's the filtering I have issue with. I'm other words I agree that "faithless electors" is not really an issue rather my problem with the electoral system is that it's not a passthrough and does change the outcome.
Making up stories of past and present hardship for sympathy does sound like my ex who was diagnosed with BPD. But not everyone diagnosed behaves the same, and there are several similar disorders in the cluster, plus comorbidities. The diagnoses are really just descriptive anyway. We don't know enough about our minds to really understand.
Ultimately doesn't matter. Sounds like you have reason to doubt this person. If you can't or don't want to disconnect then all you can do is watch their behavior and react accordingly. If they betray your trust it does really matter why they did it.
Yes, most Democrats are right wing. They take money from medical, insurance, and banks who would very much like to prevent single payer. So instead we got ACA modeled on a Republican plan with a cop out mandate from a Republican think tank. (And the Republicans still lost their frickin minds). Yes, I vote Democratic but I have no illusions that they're left of center 'cept maybe Bernie.
There's a thing called HALT/HASS. HALT stands for highly accelerated life testing. Basically you put a product under extreme stress and try to find the failure points and mitigate them. Temperature, vibration (simulated or track), humidty, power cycles, ... That said I've never seen one find everything. You can also do FMEAs, which again never find everything. In short this stuff is hard even for companies that presumably have lots of experience to draw on. Don't know if Ford did something dumb to miss this or it was just one of those, "oops we missed it" that happens.
We've always had garbage people but the problem is unfettered capitalism literally rewards narcissistic sociopathic behavior and we for some reason decided to make that the dominant system. Which means the worst amongst us have the most power and resources and help set the tone. Those people then attract the terribly misguided like Lee Atwater (US example) and religious zealots (evangelicals in the US) who propagate the message that self-interest is all that matters.
For the record I'm not anti-capitalist, but we did let the whole idea get out of control from the very beginning and I think it has a lot to do with the decline. Not to mention the coming death of hundreds of millions due to climate change.
It's basically true. The ACA drew a lot of support being compared to Massachusetts' healthcare when Romney was governor. The individual mandate, which was the necessary compromise to get it passed, was first proposed by The Heritage Foundation.
When you set a field on fire to burn your enemy's land, and you make no effort to put it out when it burns the village, don't be surprised when the fire gets out of control and comes for your land.
They had their chance. They're not interested in doing what's right, only what gets them more power.
I second this. It's your life and you don't have to, but it would not be too late to reach out. If you want you can explain that you had to cut ties to get clean. Chances are they had to do something similar and will understand. And you don't have to jump back into a friendship. Just wishing them well might still be good for both of you.
Yeah, even if we give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a bad attempt at journalism, there's no reason to defend them. Also bizarre that Elon would even get involved in it.
That was Gene's vision, that humans had grown and matured to where we could find ways to resolve problems peacefully at least amongst ourselves. The conflict and moral stories were always supposed to be external. Some Treks did this better than others, but it really was that positive vision of the future that I think resonated with people in the midst of the 60s. I'm glad to see Strange New Worlds now doing something very similar but fresh. We need some positivity in these times too.
That's not the issue so much as the "rounding" in the way electoral college votes are distributed. Plus states that do "winner take all". It has the effect of skewing the results away from being proportional to the popular vote.
Ford really should have released the electric Mustang as the Model E. Not only because Mustang was a bad brand to use for that but because Elon losing his shit about it would have been hysterical and free PR.
Further our "singular conscious" is an illusion. People with various types of physical brain damage have had their awareness "split" and had something akin to two different consciouses in their brain. Even for "normal" people there are independent processes running in our brain. Our consciousness is in charge sort of the way the teacher is in charge of the nursey school. It might decide when recess is but it can't stop that one kid from just singing for no reason.
Also to your point I think that if we could transplant a head we'd find that our sentience involves more than the brain. I think we underestimate how connected all of our systems are.
