  • Something worth repeating is that animal products still come out worse even comparing to some of the worst offenders of plants. Should we try to pick better plants too, yes, but getting people to pick plants at all is going to matter much more

Plant-based foods have a significantly smaller footprint on the environment than animal-based foods. Even the least sustainable vegetables and cereals cause less environmental harm than the lowest impact meat and dairy products [9].

Cattle feed is also actually the largest drainer of Colorado river, not almonds. Yes, almonds are worse than other plants, but it still pales in comparison to Dairy & Beef water usage

One graph even has California's animal feed water usage so large it actually goes off the chart at 15.2 million acre-feet of water (it is distorted to make it fit as it notes). For some comparison, the blue water usage of animal feed is larger than all of almonds water usage of ~2 million acre-feet of water

Correspondingly, our hydrologic modelling reveals that cattle-feed irrigation is the leading driver of flow depletion in one-third of all western US sub-watersheds; cattle-feed irrigation accounts for an average of 75% of all consumptive use in these 369 sub-watersheds. During drought years (that is, the driest 10% of years), more than one-quarter of all rivers in the western US are depleted by more than 75% during summer months (Fig. 2 and Supplementary Fig. 2) and cattle-feed irrigation is the largest water use in more than half of these heavily depleted rivers

Per liter, dairy milk requires 628.2 L of freshwater vs almond milk requiring 371.46 L of freshwater. If you use something like oat milk instead that does get you down to 48.24 L. But it's not as clear cut which plant-milk is the best across all environmental metrics - almond milk has the lowest emissions for instance. What is more clear is that dairy is the worst across all metrics

  • Even if there's no action it does still matter in so far as it reminds you that Trump is not all-powerful. Trump wants to present the appearance of 100% power so that everyone obeys before he actually has to make them (which he might not be able to do)

Words going against him from major Republicans indirectly normalize others resisting in ways that actually matter

Edit: Which is not to say that Mike Johnson shouldn't take action (he should), just not to discount the importance of normalizing criticism when Trump's strategy is to go high speed and make it seem like no one is fighting back

  • Sure, not knowing it's the US constitution is reasonable if not from the US

However, I think one could take a reasonable guess that if the first word of a constitution wasn't a pronoun, this post probably wasn't about that specific constitution

  • The US constitution. Thought it said US in the post itself, but I suppose it technically didn't clarify

In any case, they more than 99% likely mean the US constitution given how US-centric social media is, and how the US constitution's start of "we the people" is fairly well known in the US

  • They're deliberately misinterpreting some orders, but they aren't fully ignoring the courts at the moment. They still fear the courts. We've got to use every tool we can to fight back. The courts are one tool, we should use them

They've complied with important court orders recently. Don't take any outcome for granted until it happens. Otherwise we just doom and spread the apathy that Trump and Musk want us to have

    For instance,

Gov. Josh Shapiro Says Over $2 Billion of Federal Funding Is Unfrozen for Pennsylvania

  • They came close to blocking it here and the fight isn't over

There are still more votes on this budget. For instance, the senate and house republican versions are not all the same, so things will have be rectified between those giving another future vote to block it

Republican majorities are small in the house. A couple absent republicans is enough to make things fail. Another no vote or two because of some minor reason is enough to block things

  • Don't do Trump's work for him by spreading apathy and dispair. He wants us complacent and to forget the power we have. He is far weaker than he seems so he has to project absolute power. Don't give anything to him for free

  • Local and state officals can enforce laws on their own without federal involvement

Assuming everything is doomed to fail is exactly what Trump and Musk want from you. They want you to stop fighting or trying because you might realize they are weaker than you think. Don't do their work for them

  • The state and local is where most of the progress is going to happen in the next 4 years. They control a lot more than you think - even including running elections for federal office. Pay attention to all your local elections - they are going to matter a lot

EDIT: While I'm here, going to mention there are local elections in some localities across the US tomorrow (feb 25th) in parts of California, Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, & Maine

Here's a substack post with more info about those local elections

  • Musk's net worth is largely tied to Tesla's market cap. Most of his wealth is in those shares

Make the brand extremely toxic and start affecting the share price. People are investing in the company not for logical reasons, but primarily emotional ones. People seeing mass anger and protest of Teslas hit the emotion part
