It was weird to me, when I was looking for rings and jewelry that there are gems that have a higher brilliance and luster than diamonds (and unlike super-fancy bright glass is actually robust enough for typical use). And yet, the folks that want diamonds want diamonds. Since around 2016 after seeing the Mnuchins in the news, it felt like conflict diamonds and slave-mined diamonds are in.
In the aughts, there were a lot of signs that the US was moving towards a fascist police state, and when I called it out conservatives would point to Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies, and so I started doing what I called applied Godwinism which was to compare specific events and behaviors of the modern day to specific events that closely matched in the German Reich.
A more recent example came during the Trump administration, even though ICE was ordered only to investigate and detain immigrants who were also violent felons (the illegal in illegal alien is only a misdemeanor) but ICE disobeyed and detained anyone they could find, which overran the detention centers which in turn had supply crises and were overrun with infectious disease. Compare the Sicherheitsdienst under Reinhard Heydrich who was ordered to only go after Jews who were violent felons.
The good news is that enough of the Nineteen-Eighty-Four tropes have entered common parlance, so when the TOS of a smart TV tells us Refrain from having private conversations in front of the television and someone juxtaposes it with text about Telescreens, most people get it.
FDR is in office. The Social Security Act is signed

Worst of the Dust Bowl heat wave. 109℉ in Chicago

The Labor Day hurricane, a category 5, hits the Florida Keys

The Helena earthquake hits at 6.5 in Montana.
Rough year. No wonder everyone sounds like the COVID-19 lockdown.
I thought we are so familiar that we can actually reference parts of 1984.
You questioned Trump? Off to Room 101 for you.
Graham loves Trump the way Winston loves Big Brother
Well, crap, another brown person committed a violent crime. It gives FOX fuel for another two minutes of hate.
So you're saying I should resume using the original material to mock fascists, neo-nazis and, well, the transnational white power movement that has control of the federal government of the United States

The absent-minded maestro was racing up New York’s Seventh Avenue to a rehearsal, when a stranger stopped him. “Pardon me,” he said, “can you tell me how to get to Carnegie Hall?”
“Yes,” answered the maestro breathlessly. “Practice!”
--“The Wit Parade” by E.E. Kenyon on March 13, 1955
A good ambition. Practice. I believe in you!
Sadly, this happened with Pink Floyd and the Hammerskins, who were inspired by the neo-nazi sequence of The Wall
Meaning I don't get to make references to Run Like Hell or Follow the Worms when someone gets carried away puttin' on the Reich. Nope they appropriated that culture.
This is angry Hitler, but cuter.
To my mind, because I dont get the fixation on loss, it's Woodstock speak.
I'd argue this is more in line with the literal genie trope.
Fun lore. Literal genies come mostly from players and DMs quibbling over the wish spell, but they do have roots in Arabian lore like A Thousand Nights and a Night: Most genies in bottles were trapped by Solomon and are in different states of bondage, so those who you beg for assistance might provide an untoward solution. An ifreet commanded Deliver me from this sandstorm might take you to antarctica.
The monkey paw version is to allow them to fall in love with each other and then, like Eurydice wedding to Orpheus, suffer an unfortunate accident and perish right after the ceremony.
I have three small awkward necessary crap drawers, and my apple slicer doesn't fit into them. But my kitchen is so small, I call in the galley (facetiously, it's not actually on a boat).
In Greek mythology, Zeus places his son born by a mortal woman, the infant Heracles, on Hera's breast while she is asleep so the baby will drink her divine milk and become immortal. Hera wakes up while breastfeeding and then realizes she is nursing an unknown baby: she pushes the baby away, some of her milk spills, and it produces the band of light known as the Milky Way. -- Wikipedia
I suspect the band of light looked whiter than the black sky and so was named that way first, and the the Hellenists invented a -- I'm going to lose the proper word here -- explanatory myth that tells the tale of how it got to be that way.
For most of the classical age, Poseidon was the big daddy, and Zeus came later, so I think this myth is late in the game.
I think the local department promised $10K and FBI promised $25K. Even if I don't like Judas very much, the pharisees not giving him his silver shows the institution was not honorable and deserves what they feared the Christians might do.
That got ecclesiastic.

The cooperative relationship between humans and dogs has always been a working one (that is, centered around the collaboration of productive tasks), so I have less concern with dogs on duty. In this case, dogs are being used not for their keen sense of smell, but as dousing rods on the pretense of their keen sense of smell.
I did not mention dogs used as attack dogs, which absolutely abuses the dog. Not only that, but the dog is regarded as an officer if a victim fights back, what has only become a controversy when an attack dog was used on a fellow officer.
As for dogs used to hunt, that's the first thing we collaborated in doing, and we seem to have developed our relationship with dogs at the same time we developed agriculture, so they'd definitely be used to hunt vermin including foxes and coyotes.
To be fair, the same part of the bible also condemns men for having sex but if you're an undisciplined rape-monkey, stick to your one wife, and only when you can't stand it anymore.
Also ABSOLUTELY NO KIDS because the end of days is this week (probably) and it's not fair to them.
And yes, many early Christians castrated themselves to show God they meant business about being faithful. No rape-monkey business for them.

Go onto Techdirt ( here ) and check Tim Cushing's blog. His beat is the abuse and corruption of our justice system. The latest issue I recall was using drones to peek into fenced backyards, into windows and deep across property lines, all without a warrant or probable cause.
During the 2010s IMSI spoofers were being used but the Stingray corporation required precincts sign an NDE so parallel reconstruction (creating an alternative plausible path of investigation to lead to the same discovery of evidence) was the norm. Eventually defense lawyers learned to press the issue, as even FBI would drop cases before admitting they used IMSI catchers to spy on where a suspect's phone was.
One of my bigger beefs is the misuse of detection dogs, which have up to a ~90% false positive rate, called Probable Cause on Four Legs it's known that most departments prefer trick-pony dogs who just signal a lot, in contrast to dogs who can actually detect stuff.
Interestingly, there is a subset of the K9 sector who train and handle detection dogs (which are still legitimately used, say to detect explosives in long lines of luggage at airports), and thanks to the common use of dogs to force a search, the public has been losing confidence in them, and courts who believe dog searches are for real.
Also, we're still wondering if the McSnitch is getting their reward money. The last I heard they were thinking about withholding it.
And that would be such a great propaganda point to show that US law enforcement doesn't regard the rest of us as full persons / citizens and will cheat us out of our due even when we cooperate. So yeah, no-one sees nothing. Ever. You're a collaborator if you do.
Zero Witnesses.
Are we fucking with sofas again?
This is one of my dystopian thriller elements: If the police can't find the culprit of a high-profile crime, then they find someone, plant an orgy of evidence and railroad him into capital punishment or life in a supermax. Just to show that the long arm of the law always wins.
Doing a for-real investigation and just disappearing / killing off any likely suspects is optional, depending on how vengeful the elites feel about it.
