  • They're mostly pollinators. Both males and females eat flower nectar. Females need a small amount of blood in addition to that when reproducing.

  • But, Wagner doesn't exist anymore. The people who paid its members are dead. At best, there's some previous sub-groups still operating. What does this do?

  • All the money in the world clearly can't buy class, 'cause all he'll ever be is pure fascist trash.

  • Triple property taxes for units not occupied by owners. Quick fix.

    Hydrogen Hydroxide
    Water.
Specifically, water reacting as a base. When reacting as an acid its systematic name is Hydroxic Acid.
Oddly enough, water can be considered a molecule (H2O), or an ion group (H+ and OH-). Once I got that through my skull, the whole acid/base mess got much clearer.

  • Dihydrogen monoxide isn't a good name for water, especially in this context. Hydroxic acid or hydrogen hydroxide make much more sense.
Water only splits into O2 and H2 under electrolysis, not due to acid/base chemistry. You have to be actively adding electrons. In solution, it dissociates into ion states as protons H+ and hydroxide OH-.

  • That seems to be the race we're in. Discovering as much it before we destroy it and the environment they and we depend on for survival.

  • It totally is. That's mentioned in the article:

Purpureocillium species share many similarities with those of their sister genus Ophiocordyceps, which includes the “zombifying” fungi that hijack the bodies of their insect prey and are featured in the apocalyptic television show and video game The Last of Us.

  • Biden's been doing a lot of good work for labor and the unions. I don't think he's really even started campaigning yet for 2024. Really wouldn't be surprised to see him come out with a list of actual working class accomplishments and sweep the electoral college in a way that republicans aren't even prepared to answer.

Most folks aren't really tuned into half his actually delivered wins. If they play these cards right, Biden could show up with a flush and blind side the competition.

  • Total posturing. A few hundred of these would end the war overnight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGM-158JASSM

These aren't even classified. Poland and Finland have them, today.

Ukraine is keeping Russia in check with cardboard launched grenades. It's pretty amazing, honestly; both how innovative Ukraine has been under duress with almost nothing, and how bad Russia has performed in this mess they've dumped themselves in.

A few too many toes over NATO lines would decapitate the Kremlin, probably before anything could be done in response.

  • Hopefully this guy contributes to that process. Trump's insurrection should be disqualifying him from the ballot, meaning R votes, wherever he can be successfully removed from running, should be split between two losers: DeSantis and this guy. This is all beneficial to the best outcome under current circumstances.

The Guardian's Idalia coverage is here: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2023/aug/30/hurricane-idalia-florida-latest-news-updates

Helen Pidd is covering the Ramaswamy story. While they have Léonie Chao-Fong (now) and Oliver Holmes (earlier) on Idalia.

  • This rule is actually "an order of magnitude best estimate", which means it's more of a range, somewhere between 0.1 to 10 deaths per 1000 tons of carbon burned.

That leaves a lot of room for scenarios even more dire than the one outlined here.

"When climate scientists run their models and then report on them, everybody leans toward being conservative, because no one wants to sound like Doctor Doom," explains Pierce.

"We've done that here too and it still doesn't look good."

Translation: 10 billion people will die.

2nd translation: Almost everyone will die.

  • Not sure about any downvotes. I can't even see them from kbin. This is just the news as it was reported. I shared the article as I know next to nothing about this guy and found it to be a good explainer. Relatively brief and easy to follow. Also, I often get extra insight from the discussion around the news, sometimes more than from the articles themselves. Glad you enjoyed the read.

  • Any evolution or opportunity for it through any spread, especially in human adjacent vectors, is super bad news. A respiratory communicable rabies would be a potential "doomsday virus". We really don't want rabies picking up any new tricks.

  • They did. That happened. Just a few weeks ago.

The blast took place at Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant, in the town of Sergiev Posad, TASS reported. The plant is a developer and manufacturer for optical and optoelectronic devices for the Russian military, law enforcement agencies, industry and healthcare.

  • DeSantis also dumped a plane full of migrants in Sacramento and then showed up in town a few weeks later for a fundraiser.

Newsom may in fact have his eye on 2028, but for him this debate is personal. He wants to embarrass DeSantis publicly. All reports indicated those migrants were in bad shape and Newsom, if I remember correctly, ended up personally involved in helping them get sorted.

  • We've had a huge crop of Armenian cucumbers, this year. They just won't stop. Been juicing them by the gallon, to just drink. And, marinating them in mirin/rice vinegar/sesame oil w garlic for simple salads with just chopped tomatoes stirred in.

  • I'm sorry to hear it's like that, and sad to report it's getting that way here, more and more; though we don't have a word for it, yet.

You sound like a good person. Glad to have chatted. Best luck.
