  • Especially if you're older and know that everything you've worked for is at risk. Especially if you're middle aged and your hope of a comfortable old age is being destroyed. Especially if you have family, and know your children's future depends on it.

I know you mean well but fuck ageism, the youth always fight. They don't need a pep talk, older people do.

  • People capable of Einstein's genious are born daily. There's two major reasons we don't her about them.

First, (your suggestion) we have to live under capitalism. Opportunity is distributed poorly and depends directly on circumstance and luck. So most people who could be another Einstein end up working at a service job to survive.

Second, the sciences have grown so much that these works are now the leaves in the canopy of a dense forest. Sure, you can see the trees, you can see the leaves, but every single tree is a different subject, every branch a new revelation, every ring built upon the previous, every leaf subdivided into thousands of little bits, and even the cells with component parts. Once you start learning about a subject you start to see just how complex something as simple as the tree really is. So just like you don't see every individual leaf, you don't hear about these people.

Bonus: science isn't the only place for genius, there's tons of absolute geniuses working as artists, and that's a good thing.

  • The aurora can display in a lot of ways. Often it looks like columns appearing then disappearing like dust catching sunbeams through the blinds. It's the same idea as taking a long exposure of a thunderstorm. The lightning didn't all happen at once.

Where someone posts an image can also depend on community preference and care given to posting in multiple communities.

Also odd to suspect something in a science community is less likely to be real than one in an art community but, all things being even, the skepticism is a bit healthier here i guess.

At the end of the day, this doesn't look unlike a real aurora and the time lapse is also evidenced by the brightly lit hilltop... ... And the stars. And bright unlit areas

  • It's a long exposure. But yeah the Aurora can be rather bright given geography, atmospheric, solar conditions, and luck. Definitely easy to get views like this with the naked eye closer to the Arctic circle.

  • Ehhh... Well, in computer processing it does play a huge role in heat transfer requirements which has often driven transistor density.

But fair to say efficiency is often more likely to create induced demand rather than a net reduction in consumption

Higher fuel economy -> more cars interplanetary frigates

Cheaper logistics -> more goods transported between systems

Faster internet -> more galactic utilization

More railways -> lower profit for the car speeder industry, uhh... Wait! I meant more transit by rail demand?

    Edit: forgot which sub...

  • Does vary by mosquito species but yeah for the most part.

Alpine mosquitoes with shorter seasons tend to have swarming strategy, they're loud and you notice when they land on you. It's just that there's about 1-200 of them flying about you so lots will still be successful. These ones mostly don't spread disease but they ruin a hike.

The sneakiest ones are in the tropics and are the species that spread malaria and other disease.
