  • You people are so weird. At no point did i say that medical masks are hard to breathe through. I only said that whatever they are wearing will be easier to breathe through. Obviously the standard masks are also pretty easy to breathe through, billions of people did it for 2-3 years without any major problems.

  • Turn of your capitalism brain ffs. This is not the place for companies and markets. If there is a financial interest then the app is worthless by design. iOS is not a trustable platform for anything security related so obviously you shouldnt use it for anything that concerns your physical safety. Dont forget, apple will always bend the knee to governments in the end.

  • No, and even worse, its only for apple devices lmao. These kids are so unserious in their activism it would be funny if it werent so sad. If shit hits the fan, this stuff will go down instantly and im sure it has no backup plan for a Tor based or p2p service. Activists in the US should start using Briar. This situation is exactly what it was made for and people have to get their tech game up fast or they will be done for. Get a shitty 80$ android phone if you only have an iphone. Install a panic trigger app that will wipe the phone if you are in trouble.

    On ICEBlocks website it says:

Modeled after Waze but for ICE sightings, the app ensures user privacy by storing no personal data, making it impossible to trace reports back to individual users.

Which worries me, because if its closed source then thats a worthless promise and actually makes the app a perfect candidate for a honeypot or backdoor.

  • While i agree with the point you are making, its just quite the obvious difference. Medical masks have much much denser material so they dont let water droplets through. These masks are usually just some clothing fabric that is full of big openings and really easy to breathe through.

  • Im no expert here, but these drones have to fly many kilometers and they carry the spool on board, so the added weight is probably an issue. I assume the production would be much more complicated too. For normal industrial underground fibers the shielding can be quite thick and stiff, but for this you would need some kinda coating that can be incredibly thin while also somehow blocking all light.

  • As long as you dont connect it to the grid (island mode) you can do whatever the fuck u want and go way beyond 800W. You can buy a full kit of these 800W setups (panels, cables, inverter) for like 2-300€ sometimes. The one i got says that its island capable, but its not really optimal for grow lamp use, because for that you need battery storage and the cheap ones arent capable of that. Idk how much power these lamps use, but there are relatively cheap 12V solar charger + inverter systems that use car batteries for storage.

  • Yes, its kinda complicated and there are lots of reasons. The solar advocacy groups fought a lot to make it so that you dont even have to ask/notify your landlord or energy provider for these <800W installations

    • Feeding in a lot of power (and especially quickly switching it on and off) can create grid instability (because the electricity grid is stupid and designed for large centralized powerplants)
    • At some point (really big commercial installations) you are even required to install a remote disconnect system that the provider can use to turn off your installation if the grid is overloaded
    • You dont get the same amount of money for selling energy then buying it, which means with high power installations the provider loses money if they dont install a smart meter (meter that keeps track of how much flows out and into the grid)
    • With <800W installations the provider can still install a smart meter if they want, but you dont have to notify them of your installation

I hope i didnt mix something up here. Obviously read about your local laws if you install anything.

  • It has been insanely successful in Germany. Around this time last year the total number of these private mini setups reached 500.000. They are typically 800W peak power (because thats the legal limit for an unregistered installation) so that gives you 400MW of total installed capacity. Pretty dope imo.
