  • It feels like you're suggesting that adoption is a panacea, but for a majority of couples, it simply isn't. I agree it could be considered selfish, but selfishness is a virtue in our society so I am asserting that it should be expected and accounted for, rather than simply waving your hand at its inherent issues and pretending they'll go away.

Adoption has been proposed and has failed as a satisfactory solution to this problem for millenia, what has changed about it to make it relevant now?

  • IMO if you aren't making espresso then most burr grinders, even in the $40-50 are going to lead to more consistency and flavor in your brew.

If you are making espresso then my advice would be to budget enough to buy a grinder that is on par with the espresso machine itself, it makes more of a difference than I would have expected.

I struggled for years with an Encore before investing in a higher quality grinder, and now my espresso shots are much more consistent, without changing anything about the machine or process I'm using to pull the shot.

  • Based on your post history, you'll just delete your comment within a few hours anyway, but have you considered that if adoption was such a perfect solution then more people would adopt?

Instead of simply imagining simple solutions to complex problems, maybe try having a bit of empathy and see where that takes you?

    Good luck.

  • Based on the article, it sounds like dying of exhaustion is par for the course when it comes to elections in Indonesia; does anyone have any insight into why that happens? If the current process is so treacherous, are there calls to make it safer?

  • So if you lose access to all of your devices, you're completely locked out of everything until you're able to get a new working phone activated on a trusted phone number? The trade-off of inconvenience for security here just doesn't seem worth it to me.

  • I'm not entirely sure how to respond to this, seeing as your quote is of a comment made by Candelestine, so I'm not 100% sure this was intended as a response to me in the first place. Nevertheless, I do have some thoughts to share.

Main thought - I agree with you. We're clearly on the same side, arguing about nuance. Biden is super unpopular. I'm not entirely sure he's unpopular for the right reasons, but that doesn't change the fact that he doesn't poll well.

I also agree that the main reason he's even in the race is because he's the only one who has ever beaten Trump. I, like many others, am terrified of a future where Trump wins and ushers in a fascist dictatorship. Thus, the party wants to back a proven winner. We're going for the least bad option here in a choice between ol Joe and a Christo-fascist state.

If there was another Democrat out there with similar name recognition who had raised their hand, we might be having a different conversation, but conventional wisdom dictates that something really catastrophic would have needed to happen under Biden to change the math on the incumbent advantage. On reflection, while Biden still isn't my favorite, his administration has done a lot of things right. I've lived through both options and there's no contest, for me, between 4 more years of Joe or 4 more years of Trump.

Regarding winning a primary without being on the ballot or campaigning - the results in NH speak for themselves. If there was an alternative who stood a chance there wouldn't be any discussion about being on the ballot in any state. Since we already know the Dems are going all-in on Joe, the goal now is to keep the message as clear as possible and minimize muddying the waters with spoiler candidates. It wouldn't be an issue if every state used ranked choice voting, but we need every vote and first past the post makes spoilers extremely costly.

  • Dean Phillips? I'm fairly engaged in mainstream political discussions and the only reason I've heard his name is to point out that he's one of a small number of potential spoiler candidates.

Even the article you linked is full of quotes bashing his campaign.

The guy taking campaign donations from Harlan Crow ought to be enough to tell you everything you need to know. This guy isn't here trying to win, he's just trying to muddy the waters.

I know Biden is a really tough pill to swallow. It's true, I feel it too, but unless he drops dead tomorrow, he's the guy that has already beaten Trump, so smart money is going to the proven winner. The sooner we all accept that and start focusing on the down-ballot races, the better. Because truthfully the president doesn't make enough difference if Congress continues to be absolutely fucking useless.

  • Likewise - I'm consistently rated a high performer, but my lack of awareness around compensation consistently has me questioning whether it's worth my time to put those extra hours in - most of the time I decide it isn't.

We recently had a situation where my employer changed compensation criteria mid-cycle and the reaction from my coworkers is summed up by 🤷‍♂️

To paraphrase the corporate God himself:

When you're a Fortune 500 company, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab 'em by the pussy.

  • That's not how I interpreted their comment. It seems to me that they were making a statement about the broad political climate of Florida being somewhat of a lost cause, using the example of ineffectively trying to stop the ocean from reclaiming the land while simultaneously railing against efforts to combat climate change.

You specifically are not the problem, but a majority of your neighbors are. The problem isn't going to be fixed by national political forces, y'all need to organize and fix it yourselves.

  • Bluesky is supposed to be Twitter 2.0 - Jack Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter, is on the board for Bluesky and was supposedly very involved in building the platform. So in theory it could be a lot of things that Twitter wished it could, or it could just be bad like most other socials.

Either way if you have an interest in the tech world it's probably worth keeping an eye on.

  • I see the argument you're making, and it's a good one. At the same time I can't help but feel that if her policy positions don't dissuade people from voting for her, but her birth name does, then I'm going to take the win and suggest that we keep rolling with the thing that works.
