  • Oblivion is an excellent game. I'm not sure how much an official remake can bring to the table. Maybe a Skyrim-esque UI would be welcome.

What I'd really want would be a Morrowind remake. The world design and writing was beyond excellent, but the mechanics side had quite a bit of jank and the UI wasn't the best. Would love a mildly Oblivionised Morrowind. Just don't Skyrimise it - Oblivion had just enough RPG stuff, while Skyrim at times feels more like a story-action game rather than a RPG.

  • I don't know where this particular fella fits in the history, but turtles evolved from similar quadruped reptiles. Basically, their ribs evolved flat and wide so that their chests could support them better while burrowing tunnels. That turned into the turtle plastron.

  • Choosing to not use something is not a good way to learn how to use it.

In this particular instance, the lesson is to either a) use the provided database tools (e.g. pg_dumpall) for live backup, or b) bring the database cluster down before you backup the raw data folder.

  • If I were building a larger site, I'd probably use Drupal.

It's a bit of a departure from the "blogware" mindset though. You're not managing "posts" and "static pages". You're managing stuff. ...Which can manifest itself as pages or posts. Different kinds of content, different kinds of fields. Blogware gets hacky if you are posting anything but pages and posts, but in Drupal, every type of content is equally tweakable.

  • I've lately started using more paper notebooks for various projects. Recently bought a new sketchbook. Will go buy a paper almanac for the next year today.

I'm a huge tech nerd, but I don't think going 100% digital works for me. Also noticed that one of the ways I can deal with ADHD is to stop messing around with computers and do things by hand.

  • Hngh. Balatro already had a bunch of hassle on Switch eShop due to the PEGI ratings change.

Earlier, Nintendo somehow got a PEGI 12 rating for 51 Worldwide Games, which includes poker and blackjack. I wonder what they argued to avoid the 18 rating. "Sure, this compilation has poker and blackjack, but it's not like we made it fun." (It's adequate but compared to Balatro it's very much a non-frills experience.)

  • There's a movie plot hook buried there. About a kid on spectrum whose robot buddy gets killed by the uncaring business. They go "oh no, I'll have to fix my robot buddy" and go on to become a tech genius. One day, they become a tech millionaire, and the story's antagonist, the shady businesses partner, goes "look, we're bankrupt, we have no choice, we have to shut down all of the robot buddies". And the protagonist remembers the saddest moment of their childhood and are like "no, we can't do that".

  • I don't know if there's some way to override/customise the notification sounds on Android on per-app basis. At one point in history I wanted Twitter to go [random bird noises] and Reddit to go "Le." but since I don't use either of them anymore I really didn't investigate this further.

  • LimeWire was based on Gnutella protocol, which was actually the first major P2P file sharing protocol. The file discovery was completely decentralised. But yes, way simpler and less robust than BitTorrent.

  • There was some 1990s documentary about fractals, narrated by Arthur C. Clarke (I think), where he said something along the lines of "I've not tried this myself, but I've been told there's certain illegal chemicals that can cause hallucinations that look like fractals".

(I have this on VHS tape somewhere. Should probably digitise it.)

  • I'm a Finnish speaker. Nouns aren't gendered in Finnish either, so that's not weird.

Things that do trip me up:

    • Pronouns (lack of T/V distinction (i.e. just one "you") and gendered third person)
    • Articles (Finnish doesn't have articles as such, so adding them sometimes takes some brainpower)
    • so freaking many irregular verbs etc
    • seriously what is this orthography even (Finnish grammar may be complex, but the same can't be said of the pronunciation)

Actually, I'm learning French right now and gendered nouns aren't even that much of a problem. I was dreading the numerals more.
