  • The law defines "non-human" behavior "any type of behavior... not typically] displayed by a member of the homo sapiens species,"

"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Florida forever."

  • [stern stare]

Forgotten the history, have we? I was referring to Microsoft's tactics in the early 2000s.

Crypto bros have watered down the term and made it a laughing matter. They ruin everything they touch. Goddamn it.

  • I've often been like "I don't know why people complain about Fandom, this is fine". And then I saw what the site looks like without uBlock. Sweet merciful heavens. Hey, there's some ads. Let's cram some ads in the ads. Some prime blank space? Shove some annoying video things in there. Autoplaying. See that navigation bar over there? Let's make it pointless. (If you come to the article via web search, surely you want to read about some completely random stuff in another game!)

Fandom is garbage, Fextralife is garbage (and at this rate will probably be bought by Fandom one day). Indie wikis rule.

  • Okay, guess I'm technically not boycotting Tesla. I just straight up can't afford a car, not in this economy. Nor do I care, because there's a bus stop just down the street. Not that I'm intimidated by Trump because I'm not American and he can't prosecute this shit even domestically.

  • I run ad blockers. As a security measure. Ad companies collect insane amount of data and do a bunch of shady stuff whenever they can get away with it.

I want to support websites whenever I'm able, but the way ad companies operate just ain't it.

If they clean up their act, maybe then I could stop using ad blockers, but it's been decades and I don't have high hopes.

Also using ad blockers for performance and usability reasons. For example, I used to use a bunch of Fandom wikis and couldn't understand why people hated the UI. Then I saw how Fandom looks like without ad blockers and holy shit how can humans live like this

I'll admit, the thing that made me go from Kbin to Lemmy was seeing tons of spam on unmoderated places. (Not blaming the admin for not being able to manage the site in that particular case, they had more pressing issues.)

  • Hello all! I'm Rose. Also a Fediverse chick. Unlike Nicole I don't spam people. Also I'm not on Friendica (not many people are) and you probably shouldn't add me as a friend on any Fedi platform because I'm a hella boring nerd.

  • To be fair, lemmy.world response was more like "can you folks please not get us nuked IRL, we have to remove the most colourful posts, sorry" and not this Reddit response, which is more like "has anyone seen Spez? He locked himself in the closet with a shotgun aimed at the door, and we hear some agitated breathing from that direction every time someone nearby plays a Mario game"

  • Mastodon, Pixelfed, Lemmy and Bookwyrm. They all seem to cover most of my social media needs which (in all other cases beside Lemmy) can be described as shouting in the void and being happy if someone else is there too.

  • People often think it was the encryption key controversy that broke Digg. Nah, the massive vote brigades and cliques operating blatantly on the open were the first nail. The second nail was Digg redesign with the stated goal of "power users are good ackshually and no way this will go wrong"

If random ordinary users don't have any power on the site anymore - won't be heard and will just be punished for ordinary actions - what has Reddit really become?

  • SQL is an Old Language of Ancient Power. You have to write the keywords in all caps.

(Fortran is basically the same, but it's rarer. Lisp is too, but you don't need to capitalise everything, as the Ancient Power is contained in the parentheses.)

  • There's always the old piece of wisdom from the Unix jungle: "If you write a complex shellscript, sooner or later you'll wish you wrote it in a real programming language."

I wrote a huge PowerShell script over the past few years. I was like "Ooh, guess this is a resume item if anyone asks me if I know PowerShell." ...around the beginning of the year I rewrote the bloody thing in Python and I have zero regrets. It's no longer a Big Mush of Stuff That Does a Thing. It's got object orientation now. Design patterns. Things in independent units. Shit like that.

Pancake Tortoises have a fairly flat shell structure (hence the name). They like to go in rock crevices and enjoy the radiating heat. This buddy here seems to go "Awww yeah. Waffle iron mode, babyyy."

    Science Memes @mander.xyz

They were first recorded in the dawn of history. They are well recorded in the modern days. And mark my words: they shall outlive us.

Oh no. This buddy just heard about the Plumber Brothers and what they've been doing for the past 40+ years.

Happy World Turtle Day! One of my favourite turtle-releated software development things is that Firefox console will show a little turtle icon on slow requests. Picture also related.

People keep telling me that Nuon is probably the most obscure video game platform ever created. Oh, they've not heard how the greybeards entertain themselves.

Does anyone else feel strangely calm when seeing this photograph?

On an open, straight road, a giant tortoise can actually hit quite reasonable speed.

Aside of humans, turtles are the only animals to have religious rites.
