  • Weird project. Apple today released GPTK 2.0 to support ray tracing and AVX1. So they are committed to making it easier and easier to translate Dx11/12 to Metal. Their hardware has fast lanes on the actual silicon to make it even more performant. Vulkan pales in comparison (or rather the DXVK) and caps at Dx11. It can fill in gaps here and there for games that for whatever reason don't work with GPTK but Apple's toolkit is clearly the future.

Not sure why someone would spin this up or waste their time. Am I missing something?

  • There was a famous psychological study looking at in-groups and out-groups (us vs them mentality). They tested people with completely arbitrary differences. Things like giving some people short pencils and others tall pencils to see what would happen. Before long, those with similar pencils colluded together finding other similarities to bind them as a group. Not only that, but they looked down on their counterparts.

The famous "Robber's Cave" study looked at this as well: https://www.simplypsychology.org/robbers-cave.html

They've found this pattern everywhere and with everyone, child, adult, every ethnicity. It's how we are wired. Team Apple. No fuck you, I'm team Android. Windows vs macOS. Consoles are better than gaming PCs! It goes on and on and on. Blue bubbles vs green bubbles. Even if Apple switched the colors, it wouldn't matter. People would still be pissed text messages got blue.

There's also one huge factor no one talks about: green is not Android. Green is SMS. Since there is no interoperability between Android RCS and iMessage yet, it comes in as a standard SMS.

  • I'm not the one that bought a Samsung phone. I don't get people. Don't buy their shit. Did someone hold a gun to your head? Do a bit of research if that shit is important to you. I bet half of you don't even know what you're arguing about amongst yourselves.

  • LOL. Yes because Sony somehow would t employ the same douchery with phones as they do with their other platforms and services.

Sorry Sony, not buying your snake oil lol.

  • Never liked Samsung. No idea how they sold so many handsets with their cringy anti Apple ads. Bottom line barrel company imo that only makes decent panels and good SSDs.

They are a Korean chaebol and have been involved in a ton of legal drama. The most notable one was avoiding the cost of safety masks and suits but forcing recent graduates to work in unsafe conditions giving them leukaemia or worse. They denied it and it took about 3 years for them to finally be found at fault.

I wouldn’t use their stuff just on moral grounds. Always heard their droids were filled with bloatware and lacked support. Sucks you fell into their trap. Godspeed

  • I think it’s an 17th century vessel that primarily ships spices

  • Thanks Shadow. So far so good. Seems to have ironed out a few bugs with Photon too.

The entire UI is really evolving and the speed now is blazing! Is this how websites should be if you don’t pack them with telemetry and crypto nonsense?

  • My man taking Lemmy serious 😅

  • Isn’t Sony far worse than Google in locking you into their platform and basically stealing your data? They gutted Helldivers and thru all their players under the bus by adding a PSN account requirement retroactively, even in countries that didn’t have the service. They only backpedaled because of the massive negative backlash. They have a history of installing root kits and treating their customers like absolute trash. And you want to go with them?? Yikes.

You are way better off getting a Pixel and then liberating it with Graphene.

  • Hey I’ve schedule a 2h Slack meeting to discuss this topic more. Please confirm your availability 🙃

  • It sounds like your issue is more of a user thing and not a technical thing. Can you not root the device and install Graphene or a clean Android OS without the Samsung crap? I feel this is 100% solvable. But then I don’t buy Samsung garbage, so maybe out of the loop.

Also, Facebook needs an account. So another option is to just not have one. I haven’t had Fb since leaving college back in 2015. Doesn’t affect my life in the least.

  • You sound like a middle manager that brings a net loss to your workplace and justifies their job as crucial because without you, the coders would all be running around the office slamming into each other like 2 year olds.

Coding is the only job. Period. The rest is housekeeping. Much like digging a ditch. It’s not going to get dug if you sit around talking about logistics and reviewing all the other ditches or wasting my time telling me again and again how the ditch needs to be dug. Nor needing hourly updates on how the ditch is coming along, so you can arbitrarily make changes.

If you think I “just don’t get it”, then that totally explains your irrelevance in the work place. Because companies have long lost their way and have prioritized the structure well beyond what they are actually meant to do: get shit done. But then you sound like the type that believes companies are crucial to our success because they funnel money back into the economy and keep society afloat (narrator: they don’t), so I’ll say good day to you sir.

  • Apparently it’s not possible to own a smart device and just not install Facebook 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

  • I worked freelance for like a decade. Then I joined a “real” studio. Literally 80% meetings, team meetings, morning stand ups, presentations, documentation, and senior reviews, then 20% actual work. My old boss was great with time management but he left and the new leads would lock you into a 3h meeting, most of it to discuss other people’s work, then expect you to make 3 days worth of edits in 3h.

    I feel this meme hard.

  • Oh boy. I'm fully convinced that people who recommend GIMP don't actually use the thing. It's a train wreck and it's had almost 30 years to be better.

  • I don't even like connecting to the net with pirated games. Always feel I'll get banned and I used game piracy to test drive them. If I like them, I just hit up Steam and support the dev. Always afraid I'll get banned from a game I really love.

  • Hi, I'm a publisher and I'm really sad reading some of these replies. Yes we turn a $5 textbook into $500. And yes we don't pay the authors anything. In fact, we routinely work together to make sure they can't even go anywhere else and get paid. Yes, we exploit laws and have lobbyists in every government to protect our interests.

But we are people too! We have feelings! And it hurts to read some of the replies that blame us for being greedy. We are, but it still hurts hearing it. Please do better internet!!

  • Depends what you play it through TBH. If a program has access to your memory, then yes. Naturally it's a nuanced answer and unless you are a security expert that knows exactly how memory is allocated and how elevated privileges work, not to mention all the little bugs, etc. in your system, then the answer is yes. You aren't really safe from anything that hits your hard drive.

  • Yes this. I don't understand how anyone trusts Microsoft here (or anywhere). Their lies are legendary.
