  • Things improve.

It is not a natural law that things will eventually improve. It takes deliberate effort and money and an environment where this improvement is possible. Especially a video hosting site takes a lot of capital. And if powerful actors has a literal stranglehold on the market, then it can be virtually impossible even for obviously better alternatives to gain a foothold.

  • Men are disproportionately affected by a lot of the socioeconomic issues currently plaguing the Western world

Absolute nonsense. But good job exemplifying the segment the article is talking about by regurgitating that imaginary talking point.

  • As I understand it, most other languages have a much shorter list of words that are specifically taboo for anyone to say, in a polite context.

    Well, you understand wrong.

But we English speakers have this lovely category of words that are both nominally “forbidden,” yet also used all the time, by almost everyone.

Please don't attempt to make these kinds of linguist generalisations when you have next to no knowledge about anything else but your native language. Again, this is not exceptional to English at all.

  • Yeah other languages normally get their swears from words for things that are considered taboo but english just has such a variety.

A typical take by a monolinguist. All of the examples you mention are typical in most other languages as well. English is not exceptional in that regard whatsoever.

  • Too much hassle for them. They can in practice kill POWs with impunity and just disappear them, and probably already have done so in the past.

This seems more like them attempting to cover up yet another fuck up of theirs, and using the "no you!" retort (as in "we didn't lose 75 men, you did!") is one of Putin's favourite in those kinds of situations, because it serves as an attack as well as covering up something that would make them lose face.

And now with the added "bonus" for Putin that he can kill 75 Ukrainian POWs as a revenge for the attack, and just claim they were on the plane.

  • but Texas (and other states) is being hit hard by the number of immigrants, and if the federal government can’t (or won’t?) do anything to curb it, makes sense that they will do something on their own.

That's the thing though, they aren't. Things aren't worse than they were, this is a manufactured crisis because Republicans need some kind of tangible policy to lie about to their voters for the upcoming election. Just like the immigrant caravan which disappeared as suddenly as it appeared (as in it never existed) the previous election.

  • In a democratic country that would indeed be the result, but he became president while the majority of American voters didn't vote for him in 2016.

So that is no guarentee at all, because the US political system is archaic and rotten to the core.

  • They have got you chasing a red herring by being obsessed with the age of people instead of their beliefs. There are reactionary fascists in all age groups, new young generations of fascists are being hatched right as we speak. It isn't the age of the individual which perpetuates it, there are far more wide reaching factors involved.

  • Nah, the US has "per serving" on the label instead of "per 100 gr.". And since "per serving" is mostly an arbitrarily term (the legislation which defines it basically admits so much even), it means food producers can grossly mislead consumers about the contents of their food.
