if I don't feel like cooking I don't have an option of ordering a pizza or eating out - I'm outside of delivery range of everything
closest town has limited choice of everything. I have to get everything shipped or drive for 1.5h.
anything but essential services is more than half an hour away
also you end up thinking weird thoughts few people have before: e.g. "how do I stop moose from trampling my garlic?" I mean how many people throughout human history had pondered that? ;-)
I gave up on everyone: I've packed my shit and moved back to the EU, to a middle of nowhere, population 50. Closest neighbor is a 10 minute walk away.
Started a large garden, learned some blacksmithing and basic carpentry.
Still working remotely for the same company as before, but now when I go outside I have fresh air, I can see the stars and I can hear nobody.
Insurance rates vary greatly with zip code in Canada. I moved just before I was going to buy a car and when I got quoted over $700 CAD per month to insure a Fiat 500 (new driver over 30) I quickly calculated that taking Uber to and from work daily is going to be much cheaper than insurance alone..
We talk briefly 2-3 times a year, see each other even less frequently, despite it being less than a two hour drive. Neither side is looking to change that despite us growing up together in a happy family and there being no reason for us to avoid each other. It could be that we all don't value social interactions very highly in general.
distro repos: there is a process that is supposed to ensure no malicious changes make it through. Usually far enough behind recent code changes for new issues/code being compromised to be spotted
official package outside distro repos if packaging org has secure release workflow
building from source / official package on external repo if you know little about packaging org: malicious contributor or a compromised account is enough
unofficial package: like building from source, but you have to worry about package maintainer too
Unless you are trying to get a job with min/max age requirements, like airline pilot or us president, age provides no valuable information to potential employer other than a factor to illegally discriminate on.
Every time an ISP does that around here they send you a notification via certified mail with a prepaid return envelope and a service cancellation form included - you can decide to not continue using the service without any early cancellations fees etc.
If they fail to do that they get fined by consumer protection agency, are required to return any fees they charged based on the change and they get to start over - send a notification that follows the rules resetting the clock for those who opt to cancel
I don't see how an email that has no proof of delivery (could have ended in spam for example) would be legally binding.
Accepting a ToS update simply by virtue of no action is also questionable unless provisions permitting that were in the ToS you've accepted and even then it would not work in the European Union, because that's listed in the forbidden clauses registry.
For anything other than house roof solar price per kw is going to be the deciding factor. Rural land is very cheap compared to solar panels - we're talking about a 100:1 cost ratio.
Idk what the AIX job market is right now, but several years ago banks in central Europe poached employees back and forth just to reach minimum staff required.
Friend has a cobol + IBM AIX combo going for him and his on call + at most 1 day/week of work position pays more than my full time very senior dev role.
It mostly is, but it has it's drawbacks:
