  • I have bought K712 before the plague and ended up returning them. There was a little more bass than Q701, which was nice, but he amazing treble of Q701 was gone. I found the "upgrade" sounding boring and generic.

    To clarify: I have other headphones: HD660S, M1060C and each of them have something to offer as far as listening experience goes, just like Q701. K712 didn't add anything new, nor was it an acceptable Q701 replacement.

  • The majority of HDD failures happen in the first 1-2 years (see Backblaze data). I have a NAS that has the same 5 drives running since 2013 and in all that time those disks were not spinning for maybe 3 weeks total.

    That said I assume that any drive can fail at any time and anything I don't want to lose has 2 backup copies, e.g. stuff I am working on on my PC gets copied to that NAS, that in turn backs it up online.

  • I've had to deal with a family member like that and managed to shock them into shutting up about it in my company. "If you are going to shove your politics into everyone's faces you'll have to listen to my opinions too. You know what I think about

    <insert their favorite politician>

    ? I'd love to spend my weekend slowly drowning them in a barrel of cat piss, but I'm worried it's too good for them." 3 years later not a pip.

  • Presidential pardons can only be for federal crimes and he has NY state convictions. That judge has the power to put him in jail for most of his term (subject to appeal)

    • HDCP had flaws and keys up to version 2.1 were extracted/reversed. In addition to that there is hdfury device that legally and following HDCP licencing terms downgraded 2.2 to lower 2.x versions to provide compatibility. They got smarter and blocked downgrading in later versions. Blocking HDCP older than that would also break compatibility with devices that don't support versions of the standard newer than late 2012. Add a capture card and you are set.
    • Widevine L1 keys were extracted from a Qualcomm CPU in 2021. They are also stored in Intel CPUs in SGX which had so many flaws over the years I'd be surprised nobody grabbed keys at some point
    • Both audio and video has to be decrypted and analog at some point - you can capture it if you have the hardware and willingness to e.g. grab it at a LCD display ribbon. Not as good/convenient as decrypting it, but it is an option.
  • Peak power can only be maintained for a minute (if you are lucky) before it overheats. Peak power is the main advertised spec, so it has to be high and default mode so you don't feel cheated when you turn it on for the first time. The other modes you toggle through are settings that can be sustained for extended periods of time.

  • More expensive bourbon tends to be more interesting but not necessarily more pleasant to drink. In my case it quickly becomes too fancy for my taste buds around 2-3x the price of the cheapest one. Whiskey is a bit more complicated.

  • In my experience the vast majority of cheap knives can't hold an edge at all. The super budget stainless used is just too soft. At the same time I can find many in the $70-100 range that do considerably better in that regard - I sharpen them 3-4 times less frequently.

    I prefer to spend a little more on the 1-2 that get the most use.
