  • Does it necessarily need to be the tools of your specific job? You might not use the deep fryer in the execution of your personal duties, but it is at your job and, I imagine, could have an impact if you could get your opponent to it. (Perhaps even combining it with your previously mentioned strategy.)

  • My kid has always loved dinosaurs. One thing that always made me smile was that when they could barely enunciate anything, they would still say "pachycephalosaurus" perfectly every time.

  • For me, it's specifically the HP printer my wife has. It has one of those subscription models where you pay per page (or per some unit, I forget) and you can't use it without an account and an internet connection.

I bought a Brother that offers but does not mandate a subscription and tried to get her to use it, but she is convinced the awful disgusting subscription model is easier.

Every time I see it it makes me a little sad and a little mad, but I had her put it on my network that has guest isolation, so it can't touch or spy on any of my other devices and only impacts her.

(My feelings about it aren't quite that strong in reality, but this is a thread about appliance beef. If her printer weren't isolated, I might actually feel pretty strongly about it.)

  • My co-workers tell me it's either "that's interesting," i.e. it drew their attention; or just that they're looking at something. For example, if I provide a link to a ticket, they're indicating that they received the link and have clicked or will click it to look at it.

I have also seen one person use it like the Michael Jackson eating popcorn gif when using a messenger that did not support embedded images.

  • During the height of their advertising campaign, I bought a pair of Kiziks. I was just recovering from a newly broken ankle at the time and was dealing with limited mobility and strength in that general region.

They're fine shoes, not amazing but pretty decent; however, I've not bought any other kind of shoe since then because they genuinely are super easy to put on and take off without involving my hand, any extra tools like a shoehorn, or really anything other than my foot. I even bought a pair for my wife, who has perfectly functional feet and joints, and she has appreciated their ease of use as well.

This isn't any kind of paid ad (I wish), just a sincere recommendation for the shoes if you find yourself having trouble getting shoes on and off easily. That said, they are more expensive than most shoehorns and may not last as long.

I really appreciated them at the time because I was constantly taking my shoes off and on for things like X-rays, where I could feasibly have taken a shoehorn, but it would have been slower and perhaps more awkward.

  • Your diligence is appreciated. I'm familiar with bash-org-archive and qdb.lol; the problem is searching them. I hadn't considered looking through them locally, but it's a good idea.

Admittedly I am fallible, so it isn't impossible I saw the quote elsewhere, but more likely I'm misremembering the quote referencing Gentoo. Perhaps it was about Arch or even just generally about compiling software. I'm pretty sure the quote referenced xchess, so perhaps that would be more helpful to grep.

Either way, thank you for making the effort to find it.

  • bash.org is gone and I can't find a reliable way to search its replacements, but there was a quote on there that said something like "I love Gentoo. You can sit back and it'll look like you're a badass hacker but in reality you're just installing xchess or something."

  • On OkCupid, I once briefly courted a woman with the username "RazeTheAxolotl." One of my opening questions was whether she meant "raise" or "raze." She meant "raise."

I don't think asking that helped with my chances. We didn't end up going on any dates.

  • Adventure Time for me. The first two, IIRC, seasons are explicitly "anti canon" per the creator and drove me away as a result. At a friend's insistence, I persisted until season three and it ended up being among my favorite shows, it just kept getting better and better.
