  • Yeah well, it's not like it's beneath the US government to do the same thing. Remember Cambridge analytica, or the Snowden leaks? My point being, as far as I'm concerned as a citizen, banning TikTok just transfers power to a more concentrated group of actors. That makes the problem worse.

  • Watching from Europe I have no idea what the problem is. The US spies on our data, the CCP spies on our data. I can see why the US government might worry that they can't access the data (except TikTok runs its servers on Oracle databases in the US just to satisfy them). But I don't understand why the citizens of the US would support tightening the monopoly to just Facebook and Google.

  • I will never stop playing that game. I would suggest playing with "Peaceful" difficulty level at first (and maybe choosing Phoebe Chillax as narrator) so you'll have time to advance. There's so much to discover and do anyway without everything trying to burn your house down.

  • It sounds like a Hollywood movie. "Hacker tattoos"? Single person took on an entire country? I dunno, something about this is off, like it's too juicy of a story for Wired to scrutinize it properly and there's really more (or less) to the story.

  • And I don't see why Arch is relevant to the discussion. My point is that software being non-proprietary is not a guarantee for preventing fuckery like Microsoft's. Profit-maximizing companies will maximize their profits, proprietary software or not. Canonical, which sells a non-proprietary Linux distribution, is an example of this.

  • People don't even use it for funny things though. I only see it as a way to shame people, as if they're laughing at you. Except it's almost always just stupid deflection when they don't have any objective arguments to offer. It's what I imagine debates would be like in "Idiocracy", and it makes me lose hope for humanity.

  • Funny you would post about such an obscure subject now. I was just checking that book out a couple of days ago, probably because of a reference from the tz database or Joda Time. In my spare time I'm working on a library for calendar calculations so this might just be the push I needed to order that book.
