  • It's been a month since I started journey with Linux Mint as my daily driver. I enjoy tinkering with things like PulseEffects (trying to create similar sound effects as in Windows). Also tried to customize Conky, but I think I need to learn Lua.

I also found out that my setup without a swap file / partition. I guess it because I use btrfs for the root partition, so the Mint installer replaced swap with some tmpfs folders. I only realized after I got stuck in OOM. 😂😂

  • Just like me, I also grew up with Windows XP and still playing Master of Orion on Linux today.

  • If you need offline version of the sites you can save them with SingleFileZ

  • because today's computer are so incredibly weak they can't handle a few megabytes of text anymore.

I mean, sites today are more richer compared to earlier 2000s. We have css, more complex js scripts, embedded fonts, embedded videos etc. I'm sure you understand that it takes more than a few megabytes of RAM.

  • Adobe is an evil company that will do whatever it takes to F its users,” one employee wrote, echoing sentiments

    Microsoft : first time?

  • Just use KDEConnect or LocalSend, it's not safe to use RDP to share files.

  • Cisco operates from the ISP side, they'll poison DNS through their routers. And you should be aware that your ISP will employ Deep Packet Inspection which can also be done with Cisco routers. That means they can intercept internet traffic, especially if your internet connection is not encrypted.

  • Mander is not the only instance having this issue. Other instances like lemmy.nz (it was), reddthat also aussie.zone, monyet.cc have similar issue since months ago. I assume the culprit is cogent's de-peering drama not from lemmy itself.

    https://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/9896-ntt-cogent-peering-dispute-increasing-latency-for-some-routes

    https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/1cu13bv/cogent_depeering_tata/

And those lemmy instances are hosted in APAC.

Also you can check federation issue with this

And if I'm not mistaken our admin has solution regarding the issue a while ago, you may ask Dave.

  • Woahh thanks a lot Dave! Very interesting thread, I'll try on my V14 first maybe also X240 later.

If you don't have another windows machine then I think it's a good idea to duel boot Windows initially. I've been running Linux as a daily driver the past couple of years but still occasionally do stuff in Windows. It's pretty rare these days, though!

Yup I was thinking to start familiarize myself with Linux as a daily driver. I still need Windows for some times, because of .xlsx files from work used a lot of formulas and VBA.

  • Damn, a 40-year-old man is a boomer and he became a minister. This really sucks..

  • Just bought Lenovo laptop, and thinking to start using Linux as daily OS, dual boot with Windows as I still need Lenovo Vantage.

  • I mean Taupo lake looks a bit low?

  • Thank you for the information, yes it is a bit confusing for me, because the article doesn't explain about low water levels.

  • Common enough; but I wonder if this is a symptom of new generation not keeping up with attempts to reduce emissions. Less coal/gas power generation & less wood-fired heating combining with a cold snap.

Yeah, I guess coal/gas power.still needed during the colder months.

"We will work with lines companies to, as a last resort, switch off power to locations for a short period of time."

Asked if she could guarantee this wouldn't happen during the colder months, Bramley said no.

"No power system can absolutely guarantee supply but as we've seen today, when industry comes together we can make sure there is enough in the system."

  • MetService has forecast temperatures to plunge overnight, with Christchurch set to fall to -4 degrees Celsius

I tought temperatures below 0°C are common in NZ 🤔

  • Possible, but it's really hard to make a living. Just look at lemmy devs, they're work totally on this project and rely on donations.
