I’m going after the right paradigm. There’s an attitude in FOSS that if you don’t blindly follow everything someone from FSF says (or someone who looks up to Stallman), you’re a bad person. See my first pull quote from above. If you’re going to say something like that and not offer solutions to the pain points of your customer journey, you deserve ridicule (“you” being the author and the slrpnk user who dropped the important first part from their pull quote). The only reason I commented was because of the complete mischaracterization of people like myself, who I know many of, where the endowment effect is a more realistic description than this narcissistic spin.

Your argument is also very tenuous given the outage I called out. I code every day. Literally not figuratively. I code on at least two different devices work days and sometimes mobile (not laptops) weekends. I require a stable remote. An outage of 170hr is not something I care to handle. That’s just me solo. If I wanted to coordinate more than me, it would be a complete dealbreaker.

Two EpiPens

I’ve shared it with my very young nieces and nephews for a few years. We do Simpsons and Star Wars, they do everything else. Now that Disney is pulling a Netflix, I don’t see a reason to double my cost for probably less viewing. For the price of a year’s sub, I can get a lot of movies or box sets. Over the years, I can get even more and never worry about losing access. Assuming Disney continues to raise prices, I can probably buy more and more for the sub price (although buying power will also drop). I can never share my access with my family any more. I can share box sets. Guess which one makes my nieces and nephews happy when they come visit.

And for those of us who can afford it, the bundle is a great way to loosely support the actual author (or his estate, in this case). No shade thrown at any book sharing because that’s what libraries are for.

Cool! Does he migrate all the code and update references or does he just make sweeping generalizations without understanding common user personas for the experiences he claims to own?

Nah, I don’t give a shit about stars or followers. Had the argument been the endowment effect, I probably wouldn’t have commented at all. I have very limited free time and choose to spend it on things I enjoy. Migrating every single one of my hundreds of repos from more than a decade of collection is not something I’m interested in. I know this because I started the migration to GitLab when MS bought GitHub and it was a huge time suck that brought me no joy. Realistically no one is going to use my code after I die so who the fuck cares.

On the other hand, choosing FOSS platforms is a collectivist investment in the long-term success of the FOSS ecosystem as a whole, driving its overall growth.

I don’t think the FOSS ecosystem could scale quickly enough to handle mass exodus. If all the MIT and Apache 2 code left GitHub for Codeberg, I think Codeberg would die. But what do I know? If Drew DeVault wants to use their free time to migrate my code to the open ecosystem and put their money where their mouth is, I’d be happy to move. I just need all of the servers and random computers that I do dev on to have the remotes updated too.

My go-to is pulling the tab into its own window. If I end up having too many windows I usually find I’m doing something wrong or trying to play too many idles simultaneously.

This is essentially the backstory of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Warhammer 40k has proceeded so far into the future and so much knowledge has been lost that mechanical gadgets like dams require priests anointing them with oil and burning incense to use them.

Dying Earth is loosely similar. There’s both tech and magic.

The Saga of Recluce builds the tech and integrates it with magic.

The Book of the New Sun takes the same tack as W40k (albeit written earlier) with far future shit relying on old tech without knowledge.

The Broken Earth trilogy has a mix of far future and magic. It’s my one of my favorites.

I lost immediate scientific respect when he said Gödel’s incompleteness theorems were equivalent to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The former establishes a logical boundary; the latter establishes a measurement boundary. They’re not the same. He also attempts to extend Gödel beyond axiomatic logical structures to the metaphysical. Again, not the same.

Pulling these two things together, the author of this post attempts to making sweeping generalizations about how his foundation is doing the right thing by working in the system rather than outside of it. Neither GEB nor his misunderstanding of it support his claim that bugs cannot be removed from a system without destroying a system. His argument is that we must work within the system because self reference. He then applies that to software where he actually gets something right by parroting best customer experience design (where we go outside the system to improve the system).

Dude’s a fucking nut. The book he’s talking about it okay.

The manifesto is a good and quick read. Steven Levy’s Crypto covers the movement a bit too. It’s a bit strange to use it in this context because there’s not much more to it than PoC or GTFO, communication is key, encryption for everyone. You can’t really replace a more complete paradigm like cyberpunk with cypherpunk. I’d even go so far as to say you can’t combine solar and cypherpunk because cypherpunk is a direct response to the misuse of tech and government whereas solarpunk is about great government tech without the negativity.

That’s fair. With that line of logic, the author had to say what he said so there’s no value behind criticizing him. Granted you had to criticize him because you have no free will either. The conversation is completely meaningless because all of this is just preprogrammed action.

So are you suggesting that humans “[lack] agency [and] the ability to make dynamic decisions?” Your point is that humans are just AI and, if we’re going from this quote, we can’t have agency if we are the same.

Apologies. I copied the quote from his Wikipedia article. The other sentences I left out included him potentially assaulting a drunk roommate and the decade+ of evidence covering his interest in CSAM. That really changes your context quite a bit, no?

Still waiting for you to produce evidence of his defense about it all being the CIA. You’re really focused on the poor wording of a single news report covering his case and you’re missing the preponderance of evidence.

That was never part of his defense. Do you think the CIA colluded with him and his lawyer to accept responsibility for the material the CIA planted to sandbag his sentence? I feel like an innocent person would be screaming that. Hell, even possibly innocent/possibly guilty folks do.

Whether or not you think he should be jailed for leaking CIA secrets, the dude had child porn. He deserved a serious sentence because he expressed zero remorse for that. Along those lines he couldn’t even fucking pretend to have leaked the state secrets for any other reason than the CIA was a shitty place to work. You gotta play the fucking game if you’re gonna fuck with the government. You can’t just be a crusty old coder.

I’m not sure how you get this from the article, though. Evans has no doubt it’s possible; like anyone with any knowledge of the state of AI he also knows that’s really fucking far away and just science fiction today. On the other hand, if you’re going to reduce things to the absurd level comment chain OP did, I suppose the future is now because judicial AI is just as racist as cops.
