  • The plan... does not involve direct payments to descendants or the two remaining survivors of the attack... The funds, raised by private trust...

So, not really reparations, and not really from the city.

It's a great initiative, but I don't know why they are trying to make it something it isn't. That's not true, I do know why. "Tulsa reparations" gets more engagement than "Private investment in infrastructure and community resources." I guess I just wish that journalism didn't involve so much lying.

  • Nah, see, this is the rhetoric that compounds the problem. The Israeli government is currently run by ultranationalists who are engaged in a genocide. They need to be stopped. That's an objective and reasonable statement, backed up by evidence and moral justification.

To say that the nation and its people are monsters who do not have a right to exist, that's anti-Semitism.

I'm an American. Donald Trump is a criminal, and belongs in prison. He should be stopped. If you have a plan to stop him, I'll probably support it (within reason). If you were to say, "America has no fucking right to exist. They are a colony of deprsved monsters," I could understand why you think that given the actions we have directed or supported internationally, but I would have to disagree.

Israel is a nation of many people. Those people have a right to exist, just as Palestinians have a right to exist. Existence doesn't have to be a zero sum game.

  • The reason that an oil change should take time is that it takes a while for all of the used oil to drain out. That's why commenters are recommending you do it yourself, because you can leave the car for 20 minutes to just drain. Then you remove the filter, and don't be surprise if more oil drains out. Replace the filter and then refill with oil.

Quickie Lube places that promise a 5 minute change are either lying about the time or lying about changing the oil. You would also control how frequently the filters are changed. You don't have to change the filter as often as the oil, but certainly every other oil change. I replace mine every time, but I recognize that's probably unnecessary.

All in, the process will take you about an hour, maybe longer the first time you do it. A pro with all of the equipment laid out and a proper garage can cut it to 30 minutes at best.

  • First, you don't owe anyone anything.

But consider that you are in a position of relative (heavy stress on relative) privilege. Most trans individuals don't have the resources or support you had during your transition. Most don't even have access to the medical care you received. The people seeking that same care you received as a child are being demonized and targeted by bigots, fascists, and Nazis.

We all live in our society together, and "activism" is usually just someone standing forward and saying "this is wrong." Do you advocate for trans rights at all? Or are you worried that speaking out will clue the bigots in on your situation, and you will be targeted for harassment or worse? That's a legitimate concern, and being outed would undeniably affect the course of your life. I'm not saying any of this to criticize your decisions. But you should recognize that the bigots are winning, and your fear is critical to their strategy.

You have a family to consider. I know I put my family above any other priorities, and you can ignore anyone trying to convince you do do different.

But what if your kids were trans? What if they grow up in a world where it's encouraged that they hate trans people? What if they need the same care you received? Would you counsel them to hide? Would you encourage them to be proud of their whole, authentic self? Who would be their role model for living life on their terms, undeterred by small-minded dipshits or violent tyrants?

I'm not trans, so I have no frame of reference for what you're dealing with. But as a parent, I always try to make moral decisions based not only on how it will affect my kids, but also on being the person I would want them to be.

Be safe. Trust in compassion. Have faith that the bad people are vastly outnumbered.

  • They don't wait for birds to die to raise their replacements. Think of it like a flowing conveyor. The culled birds were going to be replaced eventually anyway, and ramping up production probably means paying more to get birds, and they will produce fewer eggs for a short while.

  • Fair enough, I've never vaped. I quit smoking cold turkey 20 years ago, before vapes became popular. Quitting was fucking hell, and I don't begrudge anyone whatever tools or transitions help them manage the process. I never recommend anyone quit cold turkey, because I know first hand what a nightmare it was.

My only point is that the manufacturers of nicotine products do not have your best interests at heart. They want to keep you addicted, and get new people addicted. If they could make a product that delivered nicotine and tickled your genitals at the same time, they would.

With less appealing flavors, it might help people like yourself reduce your nicotine intake. Smell and taste are strongly linked to the neurological pathways for pleasure and memory.

When I smoked, a friend of mine would frequently smoke cloves, and so when I was quitting the smell of vanilla or spices would make me crave a cigarette. Associating nicotine with certain flavors will make you crave nicotine when you smell or taste those flavors. Making it less pleasurable over time would reduce cravings.

Either way, if your goal is to stop, then flavors aren't helpful.

  • As fucked up as all of this is, it's yet another thing that Biden left open because of half-measures and non-existent leadership. Actual progressives would use the opportunity in power to put in place pathways to citizenship that cannot be simply revoked by the next administration. Biden's lack of conviction (or rather lack of desire) on the issue of immigration was the frog to Trump's scorpion.

Trump may well be the anti-christ. But the Democratic leadership is the Harry Ellis of the Nakatomi Corp. We're the hostages, and there's no John McClain crawling through the air vents stealing detonators and taking out the villains.

  • Eh, their argument is that children vaping leads to nicotine addiction leads to smoking. It's not a great argument, but it's not entirely without merit. Someone who is using vaping as a more healthy alternative to smoking is already accustomed to the flavor of cigarettes. Flavored vapes aren't necessary for the smoker to switch.

  • I said this same thing at the time, and added that there is a second category of hate-reviewers, critics who are tired of Comic Book Movies. Critics watch movies to write reviews and draw readers to sell ads. They must watch every movie, and it's entirely relatable that they would be sick of slogging through yet another superhero origin story, especially given the DC, Sony, and Fox garbage that tried to emulate what Marvel had done. Terrible movies make for entertaining reviews. Shitting on bad movies is good for engagement, which sells more ads.

But the movies aren't made for critics. They aren't made for casual viewers. They're made for fans. If you don't want to watch a comic book movie, all of its flaws will stick out like when you bit the inside of your cheek.

So you have the bigots who hate seeing women, minorities, and LGBTQ+ representation in films. Then you have the critics who want to gather clicks. And you have legitimate grievances with formulaic movies, bad writing, and unfinished CGI.

These snowball into a compounding, self-sustaining feedback loop, and if you aren't paying attention, it seems like consensus.

None of the MCU movies have been terrible. None of the latest batch have been perfect movies, but even the worst ones have been entertaining and sincerely enjoyable for fans of the comics.

Compare the Marvels to a movie like Madam Web, which was irredeemably bad, or Wonder Woman 1984 which was reviled by DC comics fans. The reviews for those movies focused primarily on their flaws, and not being "woke."

  • I can't imagine what she must be going through. It's a horrible and traumatic loss.

But the people selling her on the idea thay such a thing will ever be possible are ghoulishly preying on a grieving mom. Her son is gone and will never be alive again. There's no amount of money that can change that.
