  • Real talk? I genuinely don't care. I have actual work that needs to get done. I'm going to use whatever I can to make that faster/easier. Of all the decisions I need to make in a day, this is a pretty inconsequential one.

  • The Hyperion series is the best scifi I have ever read to be honest.. It has the adventure of something like Ringworld or maybe Ender's Game, politics like Foundation or Dune, philosophy like Childhood's End or The Left Hand Of Darkness. The first book is structured like The Canterbury Tales too.. Like a loosely connected group of short stories instead of the modern style 600 page slog.. It makes it really easy to get in and out of.

I honestly can't imagine anyone not liking that book. There are so many layers it's super easy to find something to love.

  • I cannot connect via VNC or see the folders from other devices.

Troubleshooting literally anything with computers requires logs, error messages, description of current behavior (ideally with expected behavior), and a background of what other devices/systems/OSes/etc are involved.

Posts like this that basically say "it doesn't work" with no additional context will NEVER get you any help because no one knows what problem you are seeing.

"I'm running X os, version Y. I'm trying to do Z. The error message i am seeing in the logs for $SERVICE is 'FATAL: Unable to do $TASK'. I tried to do this but I'm still not seeing the expected behavior."

^^ This is how you get someone to help you.

  • Are you sure this is the most efficient way to accomplish the goal?

Resilio Sync will just sync files to different locations automatically.. You don't need to worry about firewall rules or DNS/IP addresses doing this either..

  • I pepper my randomly generated passwords. For example, imagine you have a random string generated from your password manager. If the password manager's database is breached or your master password is leaked somehow, the attackers have access to all of your information.

Now think of a word or acronym or something.. Something simple (can be simpler than a normal password). When you add a login, save the generated string to the manager but use a combination of the string + unique word for the website login.

Let's assume CHEESE is my pepper word.

    The generated string: hjifd;39Vq$7

    Saved to password manager: hjifd;39Vq$7

    Submitted to website: CHEESEhjifd;39Vq$7

Now even if the database is leaked my passwords are still mostly useless.

  • Agreed. It takes zero effort to have a "Belgium Grand Prix official discussion" post which doesn't alienate people who live in different time zones.

Also, the "don't look at this instance" argument doesn't work. Even if I don't subscribe, the posts still make their way to the All feed.. I don't want to block the community but, with spoilers, I feel like it's necessary.

  • Mars Attacks

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - The opening sequence is pretty amazing actually.

Sex Drive (esp the directors cut)

This is harder than I thought it would be. I was also surprised at the ratings for Mars Attacks and Sex Drive. Mars Attacks is a legit great movie but admittedly very odd. Sex Drive is just stupid fun.. Kinda peak teen sex comedy. Not perfect but funny in it's own way.

  • I saw a thing with Hugh Laurie not too long ago and he said something like, "America is too big to even know itself. Someone in Georgia has no idea about the day to day life of someone in Oregon."

I've been thinking about that a lot lately.

  • I know you said the US but have you considered moving abroad? If you want a similar timezone to the States, Mexico and Chile have pretty easy immigration programs you should be able to qualify for without much effort.. The crime rate in Chile is about the same as Canada IIRC. I left the US in 2017 and I honestly could not imagine coming back at this point.

  • Same. 5 minutes after installing Copilot I literally said out loud, "Well.. I'm never turning this off."

It's one of the nicest software releases in years. And it's instantly useful too.. No real adjustment period at all.

  • node-0 node-1 node-2 ...

Everything runs kubernetes so the names are mostly irrelevant.

Years ago I worked at a company who named everything after WoW characters. I wished murder was legal in those days.
